What is International Trade and Trade Finance?
International trade is the concept of this exchange of goods or services between people or entities in two or more different countries. Both the parties benefit from the exchange because there is a need or want of goods or services. Although sounds simple, there is a great deal of theory, policy, and business strategy that constitutes international trade.
Trade Finance is when an exporter requires an importer to prepay for goods shipped. The importer wants to reduce risk by asking the exporter to document that the goods have been shipped as proof and trade finance likes to manifest itself in the form of letters of credit (LOC), guarantees or insurance and is usually provided by intermediaries, such as banks or financial institutions.
The importer’s bank provides a letter of credit to the exporter (or the exporter’s bank) providing for payment upon presentation of certain documents, such as a Bill of Lading (B/L). The exporter’s bank may make a loan to the exporter on the basis of the Export contract. Bank-to-bank transactions, where one bank provides an account and related services to another in a relationship is called correspondent banking.
