Established in 1869, The University of Portsmouth is a leading modern university with a strong reputation for teaching and student satisfaction with notable research strengths. There are over 20,000 students studying a wide range of courses at the University with around 3,000 overseas students from 100 countries. The University of Portsmouth is a research-active university with wide range of activities across many subjects. Areas of international excellence include the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences, the Centre for European and International Research and applied research with business, industry and the public and voluntary sectors.

In the 2008 National Student Survey the students rated Portsmouth first out of all modern universities (88%), and highest of all south coast institutions for overall satisfaction. Teaching record received the highest possible rating in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency audit. More recently the university received awards for excellence in teaching and learning, one of only 16 institutions to receive more than one award.

Undergraduate Programs

Maritime Programs

  • BSc (Hons) Maritime Studies (Learning at Work, Flexible duration): This course aims to enhance your nautical knowledge and experience whilst developing the key technical and managerial skills required in today’s maritime industry. You may be able to use your award to gain professional recognition. It can help junior officers prepare for future senior roles or help with a successful transition from the Royal Navy into the private sector. Students who successfully complete the BSc (Hons) Maritime Studies can use their studies to gain Incorporated (IEng) status through the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

Supply Chain Programs

  • BSc (Hons) Business and Supply Chain Management (3 years full time, 4 years sandwich with work placement): Supply Chain Management is a pivotal discipline that lies at the heart of business. If you are interested in an exciting career with limitless potential, this course will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge required by employers. You have the opportunity to gain a valuable professional certificate through the use of SAP’s Enterprise Resource Planning systems which are widely used in supply chain management.

Masters Degree Programs

Marine Programs

  • MSc Maritime Studies (Learning at Work, Flexible duration): This course can help you to become a greater asset to your ship, whether you are aiming to succeed from navigating officer to a managerial role or pursue a role in international maritime policy or maritime security and defence or transition from the Royal Navy into the private sector. Students who successfully complete the MSc Maritime Studies can use their studies to gain Incorporated (IEng) status through the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). You may be able to use your award to gain professional recognition.
  • MSc in Coastal and Marine Resource Management (1 year full-time, 2 years part-time): You will be introduced to technical and analytical frameworks and concepts, which will enable you to study the major course themes: the physical environment; the institutional frameworks that have been developed for coastal and ocean areas; and the value of coastal and marine resources. If you work or hope to work in an organization involved in marine resource policy or in the use or development of maritime resources, or would like to contribute to the conservation of natural resources of coasts and oceans, this could be the program for you. This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). On graduating from this course, you can expect to find roles within government agencies, environmental consultancies and observational or research institutions that oversee the investigation and application of resource management issues.

Supply Chain Programs

  • MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management (1 year, full-time): This course focuses on the integration of analytical techniques for optimization with the decision issues and technology relating to logistics and supply chain management. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Graduates of the MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management course at the University of Portsmouth with an overall average pass mark above 50% are eligible to apply for Chartered Membership (CMILT) once they have gained the necessary experience.

  • Campus: Portsmouth University is located at Portsmouth, the second largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England.   • Center for Enterprise: The Centre for Enterprise, established in 2000, aims to inspire Portsmouth students to learn and succeed in entrepreneurship, offering free training and mentoring to both former and current students.
  • Graduate Employment: The University of Portsmouth graduate destinations for the class of 2010 has produced a strong set of results once again; over 89% of the graduates went into employment or further study and training. The graduates compete well in the graduate market place and overall the figures compare favorably with Higher Education Institutes across the UK.
  • Research: Research at the University of Portsmouth is world-class – with an average 40 per cent of the research rated internationally excellent or world-leading and 78 per cent rated internationally recognised or above. This was the outcome of the national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008).
  • Study Abroad: Exchanges to European countries are covered by the Erasmus program. The Erasmus program enables students to choose to either study or work in any of the participating countries from 3 to 12 months during their studies. You can go on a study placement from a minimum of three months up to a maximum of twelve months. There is also an option to take a study placement up to twelve months and then an extra work placement up to twelve months straight afterwards. This is only available if your course structure permits it. You cannot, however, do six months on a study placement and six months on a work placement and then repeat this for a second year. Please check with your Departmental Coordinator which options are available to you.
  • Housing: Student Housing's aim is to help all students to find the right home and look after their housing needs throughout their time at University. There are 3000 Halls rooms arranged in three clusters located in Southsea, Langstone Student Village and in the Guildhall Campus.
