Free Online Maritime and Logistics Courses from Leading Institutions in European Union
Funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Program, The KNOWME project focuses on the importance of the human factor within the shipping industry which is covered by the European Commission’s ‘Maritime Transport Strategy 2009-2018’. The KNOWME project is concerned with the creation of a maritime industry knowledge network for raising the knowledge level of the industry human resources and improving its image and marketability among key decision-makers, the labor market, and the public.

Maritime & Logistics E-Learning
- Maritime Logistics & Supply Chain Management (45 hours): The aim of this e-course is to describe the convergence of maritime transport and logistics, previously considered as two distinct subject areas. This convergence has resulted in the formation of a new field of study called: Maritime Logistics and Supply chain management. With the help of a literature review and different real case examples, the e-course will describe the importance of logistics activities in the maritime transport sector. The e-course will also discuss how maritime transport operators are extending their services to cope with the demand for efficient maritime supply chains from their customers.
- Environmental Management (45 hours): This e-course on Environmental Management in the maritime industry will give you a good overview of the environmental impacts from the shipping industry and provides you with tools in order to understand and organize environmental work within a company. The overall aim of this course is to introduce central concepts, work methods and company aims of environmental management.
- Cross Cultural Training (45 hours): Seafarers have to work with a big range of different cultures, on board as well as in port. Not knowing the cultural differences of the people involved can lead to a large number of misunderstandings, unnecessary controversies and evitable accidents. Everything you learn in this course you can use in everyday life as well as in critical situations on board. Cross-cultural competences are also very helpful for a future career ashore. Prepare participants (i.e. nautical students and possibly other maritime professionals) for cross-cultural issues on board and sensitizing them for the origins of cross-cultural misunderstandings.
- Ship Technology (45 hours): This module element “Ship Knowledge” aims at providing the basics of the ship as well as the related terms which are used in the shipping industry. It introduces different types of ships, which are used widely nowadays. It also describes the ships various characteristics and respective types of cargoes and their purposes. Some 3-dimentional views of ships are provided, therefore learners can visualize or indicate each part, space, and the size of compartment compared to the whole ship. The Ship Knowledge module consists of - Ship Types according to types of cargo (e.g. Ship for dry cargo, liquid cargo, passengers, special commodities), Ship Types according to working purposes (e.g. Auxiliary vessels, dredgers, working ships, other purposes ships), and Ship particular and principal dimensions.
- Maritime Transport Economics (45 hours): The major aim of this course is to engender an understanding of both the economic theory which underpins maritime transport and how this materializes in industry practice. In order to gain this understanding, the course will identify the factors that bring about international trade and explain the emergent pattern of world trade. Transport costs are pivotal to the role of shipping in facilitating world trade, so the determinants of those costs are explained, as is the derived demand for shipping. The structure and workings of the shipping markets is a major focus of the course and this is investigated at a significant level of disaggregation by focusing on several key sub-markets.
- Maritime Transport and Environment (20 hours): This course has 2 topics: - Consequences of (maritime) transport and Minimizing the negative effects of maritime transport. The first part shows some of the negative effects of maritime transport on the environment and the balance of ecosystems, such as emissions, ballast water, or toxic lacquers of vessels. The second part is about how these repercussions can be minimized. Three different approaches can be distinguished – improving legislation to force all participating stakeholders to keep waterborne transport clean; actions taken by companies to reduce their footprint on the environment (this affects an entire fleet, an entire port, etc. or is company-focused); or technical possibilities to refit vessels to operate more environmentally friendly (this affects only single vessels or is vessel-focused).
