International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) is the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and Pollution Prevention, as adopted by the IMO assembly. Adopted in November 1993, the ISM Code came into force in July 1998. It is part of the SOLAS Chapter IX - Management for the Safe Operation of Ships. The latest amended version came into force on January 1, 2015.

The company should establish a safety and environmental protection policy that describes how the objectives and implementation of the ISM Code may be achieved. Such a policy must emphasize how a company is committed to achieving the highest safety management standards throughout the organization and help protect the environment in the area of its operation.

The company should define and document the responsibility and authority and provides adequate resources to the personnel such as Designated Person. The company also must continuously improve the quality and safety of the services while adhering to national and international regulations and relevant standards and guidelines.

Section 2. Safety and Environmental Protection Policy

ISM Code Safety and Environmental Protection Policy for Companies

2.1 The Company should establish a safety and environmental-protection policy which describes how the objectives given in paragraph 1.2 will be achieved.

2.2 The Company should ensure that the policy is implemented and maintained at all levels of the organization both, ship-based and shore-based.

3.1 If the entity who is responsible for the operation of the ship is other than the owner, the owner must report the full name and details of such entity to the Administration.

3.2 The Company should define and document the responsibility, authority and interrelation of all personnel who manage, perform and verify work relating to and affecting safety and pollution prevention.

3.3 The Company is responsible for ensuring that adequate resources and shore-based support are provided to enable the designated person or persons to carry out their functions.

The Company which has taken over all the duties and responsibilities imposed by the Code should provide adequate resources (e.g. technical, financial and human resources) to ensure that the safety management objectives will be achieved. ISM-related tasks being carried out by the Company's branch offices or by external entities should be outlined in the SMS. The Company should verify that all those undertaking ISM-related tasks perform in accordance with established procedures.
