RYA Accredited Leisure Training and Online Interactive Classes & MCA STCW Courses in Bristol
Located at the Floating Harbor at River Avon in Bristol, Bristol Maritime Academy RYA Centre runs a full range of RYA recognized marine industry courses including Powerboat, Personal Watercraft and safety boat courses, practical and shore based theory at the HQ based within the historic Underfall Yard in Bristol harbor. Bristol Maritime Academy is the only RYA coastal training centre based in the Bristol Historic Floating Harbor and also work in both inland and coastal waterways.
The Center also offer a variety of shore-based programs such as Sea Survival, VHF/SRC Radio courses and a First Aid course which is specifically tailored to the marine industry and some of these courses are available online.
For those wishing to gain some extra qualifications to begin their career in the marine industry or want the exciting opportunity to live and learn in another country, training packages are available as well.
Training Programs
MCA Courses
- MCA Basic Safety Training (STCW) (6 days): The MCA approved classroom based courses cover everything from Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting to Personal Survival Techniques. The courses are run as individual modules or as intensive programs from our HQ in Bristol, using other facilities for specific elements of the training. he MCA Basic Safety Training STCW 95 / 2010 certificates are compulsory to work on a commercial vessel, which includes all of the essential codes of conduct.
- Elementary First Aid (EFA)
- Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
- Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)
- MCA Elementary First Aid (1 day): MCA Elementary First Aid is for people working offshore, on large vessels or needing to complete their MCA STCW Basic Safety Training.
RYA Training
- Powerboat Level 2 (2 days): This in depth course covering boat handling, planning speed maneuvers, man overboard recovery and collision regulations, is the most popular course within the RYA Powerboat Scheme as it introduces people to powerboating in close quarters but also at high speed.
- RYA and MCA First Aid (1 day): The RYA and MCA First Aid courses are 1-day courses which cover all the general RYA, MCA and HSE first aid requirements, however, the First Aid training is more specific to water users or those going to sea as well as anyone working in or around water.

- RYA Marine Radio (VHF/SRC) (1 day): This Short Range Radio Certificate (VHF) is the minimum qualification required by law, for the operation of VHF and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF radios in the UK.
RLSS NWSMP Training
- RLSS NWSMP 1 (3 hours): The RLSS NWSMP 1 is focused on leaders taking groups to waterside locations. On completion of the RLSS course participants will be aware of the hazards associated with water, and have the knowledge to carry out basic land based ( Shout , Reach, and Throw) rescue techniques.
- RLSS NWSMP 2 (2 days): On completion of the RLSS NWSMP 2 course participants will be able to implement on site safety risk assessments, have a working knowledge of appropriate use available equipment, set up an emergency action plan and co-ordinate emergency procedures.
DEFRA Water Safety Courses
- DEFRA (Module 1) Flood and Awareness Course (0.5 day): On completion of the DEFRA Module 1 Water Safety course participants will be aware of the hazards associated with water, and have the knowledge to carry out basic land based ( Shout , Reach, and Throw) rescue techniques.
- DEFRA (Module 2) Water and Flood First Responder (2 days): On completion of the DEFRA Water Safety Level 2 course participants will be able to implement on site safety risk assessments, have a working knowledge of appropriate use of personal protective equipment, set up an emergency action plan and co-ordinate emergency procedures.
