The college was formed in 2003 through the merger of Paducah Community College and West Kentucky Technical College and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

As of Fall 2021, WKCTC reported an enrollment of 4,869 students, with 2,961 focusing on credential programs. The student body is diverse, comprising 66.4% female and 32.3% male, with a notable 88.6% receiving financial aid. The college provides a variety of educational pathways, including associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates, supporting both newcomers and those looking to shift careers. Additionally, 1,480 high school students are enrolled in dual-credit courses, emphasizing early engagement in technical fields.

In the maritime industry, the route to advancement has evolved. Previously, deckhands could progress to roles like Captain or Chief Engineer without formal education, but new technologies and U.S. Coast Guard regulations now demand ongoing education and skills development. WKCTC is dedicated to equipping future maritime technicians with the necessary training to meet these changing requirements and succeed on America’s Inland Waterways.
