Founded in 1969, Holland College is the provincial community college for the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island (PEI). With over 2400 full-time and 120 part-time students, Holland College has more than 65 full-time career training programs to help you reach your goals.

The Holland College Marine Training Center (MTC) is located in the city of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, just minutes from the Confederation Bridge.


Marine Training Center has been providing Transport Canada approved training to the marine industry for more than three decades. In addition to the full range of certification from deckhand to master mariner, the center offers a number of specialized courses and customized training.

MTC has built an international reputation on quality and flexibility. Holland College-trained mariners are currently crewing vessels of all kinds - petroleum tankers, passenger ferries, container ships and offshore supply vessels - throughout the Atlantic region and around the world.

Training Programs




Power Engineering Program

  • 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate (1 year): Students enrolled in the 4th Class Power Engineering program will have access to a functioning power lab and a thermal generating plant simulator, both of which are provided on-site, offering you the opportunity to troubleshoot and resolve issues with the types of equipment that you’ll encounter when you start your career.

Bridge and Engine Rating

  • Bridge Watch Rating (12 weeks): The Bridge Watch Rating program provides training to those who would like to have a sea-going career but have little or no previous marine experience. This 12-week entry level course introduces shipboard terminology, safety procedures, standards for watchkeeping, and provides the practical skills and knowledge you will need to become a proficient deckhand.
  • Engine Room Rating (10 weeks): The Engine Room Rating program provides training to those who would like to have a sea-going career but have little or no previous marine experience. This 10-week entry level course provides the knowledge and skills required to understand the specific duties and responsibilities relating to the safe operation and servicing of machinery in the engine room of a vessel.
