cargo operations

Cargo operations is a specialized area in any merchant ship where safety of operations is considered prime concern. There are great risks to safety at sea and to individual seafarers if untrained workers handle cargo. Seafarers who are designated for handling cargoes are trained in this area because of the nature of advanced cargo handling equipment. It is important to know essential safety features and usage of materials handling equipment to safely handle cargo on ships.

The training programs may include - usage of various protection Equipment, safety devices and procedures, cargo securing, usage of lifting equipment and associated safety procedures, enclosed space entry to name a few. Also there are specialized training programs for seafarers sailing in Oil Tanker, Chemical Tankers and Liquefied Gas Tankers due to the natures of material transported. Also in regular ship, there are goods transported which are hazardous and harmful.

With the introduction of ISPS code by IMO, the areas of safety & security has become all the more important for seafarers and also to other stakeholders in handling specialized cargo. Coordinating the security aspects of the handling of cargo and ship stores with other shipboard personnel and with the relevant port facility security officer is also now mandatory in accordance with these laws. IMO has developed these courses keeping in mind with all such aspects of the need for seafarer cargo training.
