Cargo operations is a specialized area in any merchant ship where safety of operations is considered prime concern. There are great risks to safety at sea and to individual seafarers if untrained workers handle cargo. Seafarers who are designated for handling cargoes are trained in this area because of the nature of advanced cargo handling equipment. It is important to know essential safety features and usage of materials handling equipment to safely handle cargo on ships.

The training programs may include - usage of various protection Equipment, safety devices and procedures, cargo securing, usage of lifting equipment and associated safety procedures, enclosed space entry to name a few. Also there are specialized training programs for seafarers sailing in Oil Tanker, Chemical Tankers and Liquefied Gas Tankers due to the natures of material transported. Also in regular ship, there are goods transported which are hazardous and harmful.

With the introduction of ISPS code by IMO, the areas of safety & Security has become all the more important for seafarers and also to other stakeholders in handling specialized cargo. Coordinating the security aspects of the handling of cargo and ship stores with other shipboard personnel and with the relevant Port Facility Security Officer is also now mandatory in accordance with these laws. IMO has developed these courses keeping in mind with all such aspects of the need for seafarer cargo training.

Cargo Operations Courses

STCW Cargo Courses for Mariners

  • Basic Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations: This course provides training for officers and ratings. It comprises a basic training program appropriate to their duties for liquefied gas tanker safety, fire safety measures and cargo systems, pollution prevention, safe operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations. The course takes full account of section A-V/1-2 of the STCW Code adopted by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers as amended, including the Manila amendments 2010.
  • Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations: This course provides training for officers and ratings. It comprises a basic training program appropriate to their duties, including oil and chemical tanker safety, fire safety measures and systems, pollution prevention, operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and obligations under applicable laws and regulations. The course takes full account of Section A-V/1-2 of the STCW Code adopted by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers as amended, including the Manila amendments 2010.
  • Dangerous, Hazardous and Harmful Cargoes: This course is primarily intended for shore-based personnel and for personnel responsible for the cargo handling of packaged dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes aboard ships. It comes with a CD which contains PowerPoint presentations on the IMDG Code.
  • Safe Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTUs): This course provides basic training in the safe packing and securing of cargoes in cargo transport units.


Specilized Tanker Courses

  • Specialized Training for Liquefied Gas Tankers: Those masters, officers and others who have immediate responsibility for the loading, discharging and care in transit or handling of liquefied gases will need to successfully complete this advanced program of training in safety on a liquefied gas tanker, fire safety measures and systems, pollution prevention and control, operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations if they are to attain the mandatory minimum training requirements prescribed by regulation V/1-2 of the STCW Convention.
  • Specialized Training for Oil Tankers: This course provides advanced, specialized training for those (e.g., masters and officers) on board oil tankers who have immediate responsibility for loading, discharging and care in transit or handling of oil cargoes. The coverage of oil tanker safety, fire safety measures and systems, prevention and control of pollution, operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations complies with the mandatory minimum training required by regulation V/1-1 of the STCW Convention, and the course also includes such training as is needed to apply the provisions of Annex I of MARPOL.
