Danish Seafarer Engineer Officers Requirements - Denmark Certificate of Competency

Engineering officers are licensed seafarersis responsible for maintaining and repairing a ship's equipment, including its engine, generators, boiler, and pumps as well as Electrical, ventilation, heating, and refrigeration systems. Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) requires that the Engineering officers hold appropriate certificate of competency. For Ships of 750 to 2999 kW propulsion power, Mechanist, 1st Class (STCW regulation III/3 as chief engineer) can as chief engineer and, Mechanist, 2nd Class (STCW regulation III/3 as 2nd engineer) may work as second engineer.

For ship of 3000kw propulsion power, Chief Engineer Officer (STCW regulation III/2 as chief engineer) and Engineer Officer, 1st Class (STCW regulation III/2 as 2nd engineer) can work as Second Engineer. Other engineers in the department for ships of 750 kW or more are Mechanist, 2nd Class or Watchkeeping Engineer Officer (STCW Reg. III/1 as watchkeeping officer).

The Electro Technical Officer (ETO) is a licensed member of the engine department of a merchant ship as per section A-III/6 of the STCW Code. An electro technical officer handles several responsibilities on vessel mainly related to electrical systems of the ship.

General Requirements for Engineer Officers

  • Hold a health certificate for seafarers valid for the service for which the certificate of competency entitles the holder
  • If not otherwise stated, have completed the prescribed seagoing service and engine duty on merchant ships or fishing vessels with a propulsion power of or above 750 kW
  • Documentation of seagoing service

Danish Watchkeeping Engineer Officer Requirements

  • Have passed the mechanist exam, the engineer officer exam with maritime elective subjects or the junior officer exam as a ship's officer, AND
  • Have completed a total of 12 months' combined workshop training school or skills training and engine duty. At least 6 of these 12 months shall be completed engine duty in ships under direct supervision of an engineer officer at an approved training program for mechanists, engineer officers or ship's officers. The engine duty shall be documented through an approved training record book.

Denmark Mechanist 2nd Class Requirements

  • Have passed either the mechanist exam or the engineer officer exam with maritime elective subjects and have completed a total of 12 months' engine duty and have completed education and training documented through an approved training record book, OR
  • The senior officer exam (dual purpose) or the senior officer exam as an engineer officer and have completed 12 months' dual service and have completed education and training documented through an approved training record book.

Denmark Mechanist 1st Class Requirements

  • Have passed the mechanist exam, 2) hold a valid certificate of competency as a mechanist, 2nd class, AND
  • Have completed 24 months' engine duty, 12 months hereof under conditions where a certificate of competency as a mechanist, 2nd class, is prescribed.

Danish Engineer Officer 1st Class Requirements

  • Have passed either the engineer officer exam with maritime elective subjects, hold a valid certificate of competency as a watchkeeping engineer officer and completed 12 months' seagoing service in ships under conditions where a certificate of competency as a watchkeeping engineer officer is prescribed, OR
  • The senior officer exam (dual purpose) or the senior officer exam as a chief engineer, hold a valid certificate of competency as a watchkeeping engineer officer and have completed 12 months' seagoing service in ships under conditions where a certificate of competency as a dual ship's officer or a watchkeeping engineer officer is prescribed.

Denmark Chief Engineer Requirements

  • Have passed the engineer officer exam with maritime elective subjects or the senior officer (dual purpose) exam or the senior officer exam as a chief engineer, hold a certificate of competency as an engineer officer, 1st class, AND
  • Have completed engine service for 24 months, if at least 12 months have been completed under conditions where a certificate of competency as an engineer officer, 1st class, is prescribed, OR
  • Have completed engine service for 36 months under conditions where a certificate of competency as a watchkeeping engineer officer is prescribed.

Denmark Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Requirements

  • Have passed tests or completed training meeting the requirements of chapter III/6, paragraph 2.3 and paragraph 2.4, of the STCW Convention, AND
  • Have completed a total of 12 months' combined workshop training school or skills training and engine duty. At least 6 of these 12 months shall be completed engine duty in ships. The engine duty shall be documented through an approved training record book

  1. The training forms part of the Danish maritime training programs
  2. The training program forms part of the ship officer, skipper and master training programs
  3. The medical caretaker is the master and additional crew member appointed to that function. The training forms part of the Danish maritime officer training programs
  4. Not required for senior engineer officers
