Denmark Master and Chief Mate Requirements - Danish Seafarer Certifications


Danish Certificate of Competency as a Master (Home Trade), Master (Restricted), Master Unlimited, and Chief Mate (Mate 1st Class) for Seafarers Working in Danish Registered Ships

Deck officers are licensed seafarers responsible for the navigation and safe passage of the ship and Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) requires that the deck officers hold appropriate certificate of competency. Certificates of competency as a Mate 1st Class (Chief Mate), Master (Home Trade), And Master, entitle the holders to serve at management level on board merchant ships. These certificates are issued in accordance with the provisions of the certification order. Management-level officers must pass relevant courses in Danish shipping legislation. 

As a Master (Home Trade) (STCW regulation II/3 as master) you are the mate and supervisor of small commercial vessels operating exclusively in Denmark and the Baltic Sea on ships 20 to 99 GT. As a Master (Restricted) (STCW regulation II/2 as master) you are the captain of smaller and medium sized freighters and ferries (20 to 2999 GT). You can also work as First Mate or Second Mate on the large freighters. As a Master Mariner (STCW Reg. II/2 as master) you are in charge of all aspects of Cargo or passenger ship operations. Mate, 1st class (STCW Reg. II/2 as chief mate) can work on ships of 3000 GT or more.

Certificates of competency as a chief mate and master entitle the holders to serve at management level on board merchant ships

General Requirements for Danish Master & Chief Mate

  • Hold a health certificate for seafarers valid for the service for which the certificate of competency entitles the holder, including be fit for lookout duty,
  • If not otherwise stated, have completed the prescribed seagoing service on merchant ships with a gross tonnage of or above 20
  • Documentation of seagoing service

Danish Master (Home Trade) Requirements

  • Either have passed the master (home trade) exam or have passed the mate exam after 1 January 2013 AND
  • Hold a valid certificate of competency as a Mate 4th Class
  • Have turned 20 years of age, AND
  • Have completed 12 months' seagoing service under conditions where a certificate of competency as a second hand or mate, 4th class, is prescribed.

Denmark Master (Restricted) Requirements

  • Have passed the master (restricted) exam,
  • Hold a valid certificate of competency as a Mate 3rd Class,
  • Have completed seagoing service under conditions where certificates of competency as a watchkeeping mate or higher is prescribed - for 24 months, 12 months of which as the senior or only mate, OR for 36 months as a mate.

Danish Chief Mate (Mate 1st Class) Requirements

  • Have passed the master exam or the senior officer exam as a senior officer (dual purpose) or master,
  • Hold a valid certificate of competency as a Mate 2nd Class, and
  • Have completed 12 months' seagoing service under conditions where a certificate of competency as a watchkeeping mate or higher is prescribed.

Denmark Master Mariner Requirements

  • Have passed the master exam or the senior officer exam as a senior officer (dual purpose) or master,
  • Hold a valid certificate of competency as a mate, 1st, 2nd or 3rd class, or as a watchkeeping mate,
  • Have completed seagoing service in ships with a gross tonnage of or above 500 under conditions where certificates of competency as a watchkeeping mate or higher is prescribed for 24 months, 12 months of which as the senior or only mate, OR for 36 months as a mate.

  1. The training forms part of the Danish maritime training programs
  2. The training program forms part of the ship officer, skipper and master training programs
  3. The medical caretaker is the master and additional crew member appointed to that function. The training forms part of the Danish maritime officer training programs
