USCG Approved OUPV and Master Captain's License Programs in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and Online
Established in 1933, North Idaho College (NIC) is a public community college located in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. With an enrollment of approximately 4,300 undergraduate students, its main campus is situated at the north end of Lake Coeur d'Alene, near downtown Coeur d'Alene and Tubbs Hill, along the east bank of the outflowing Spokane River. NIC offers associate degrees, including transfer degrees and the Associate of Applied Science degree.
For over 30 years, the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center (WTC) has provided learning opportunities that enhance students’ economic self-sufficiency and boost business productivity, while also improving the quality of life and fostering economic prosperity for both students and the broader community. The WTC collaborates closely with industry and business partners to develop high-demand training programs.
WTC specializes in apprenticeships, health career training, professional development, transportation, and safety training, serving more than 5,000 students annually. Students can choose from classroom, self-study, or online courses to fit their lifestyles. Classes are open to the public, generally without pre-admission, academic, or residential requirements.
Training Programs
Captains License In-Person Class
- OUPV (6-pack) License: Earn your U.S. Coast Guard OUPV (6-Pack) license needed for fishing and tour guides to carry up to six passengers for hire on waters regulated by the federal government. Students will learn piloting, navigation, charting, and general Rules of the Road and deck. Successfully complete the four-part test and submit the certificate of course completion to the regional exam center with an application for licensure. This is a Zenith Maritime USCG-approved course.
Captains License Online Program
- Master Captain's License Program: Earn a master captain’s license and take unlimited paying passengers on a vessel up to 100 GRT. The body of water, i.e., Inland, Great Lakes, or Near Coastal, and the size of the vessel you use for your sea service determines whether you earn a 25, 50, or 100-ton Master Captain’s License. This course will meet all of the requirements to obtain your Captain's License, assuming you have met the requirements for underway sea service time.
