Deck and Engineering Cadetship Degree Programs Approved by MNTB & MCA and STCW Courses and Technical Training in Gibraltar

Founded in 2015 and located at Europa Point, the University of Gibraltar (UniGib) is a degree-awarding higher education institution established by the Government of Gibraltar. The university is aligned to the UK standards. It offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, research and professional degree programs in subject such as Management, History, Education, Nautical Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Accounting. The University also offers short courses and professional development courses.
University of Gibraltar Maritime Academy offers degree programs for the Merchant Navy and are aligned to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s standards, as well as those of the UK Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB). These would lead to deck offer of the watch certification or engineer officer of the watch certification, meaning participants can go directly into the industry as officers.
University of Gibraltar’s Maritime Academy and Stream Marine Training (SMT) have formed a collaborative partnership to provide MCA approved STCW courses and technical training for maritime students and seafarers.

Academic & Training Programs
Undergraduate Maritime Programs
- BSc (Hons) Maritime Science with Cadetship Program (3 years): This program is versatile, providing students with the opportunity to graduate with either a Deck Cadetship or an Engineering Cadetship. The broad skills set developed during the program offers students the opportunity to work ashore or at sea (OOW).
- Placements are a vital part of this program and both Deck and Engineering routes offer quality placements on reputable and well-regulated shipping companies, on a wide variety of vessel types, engaged in diverse operations.
- The Deck Cadetship requires students to spend 12 months at sea. Those who elect the Engineer route are required to spend 3 months in a workshop and 9 months at sea. Time at sea provides students with an opportunity to travel the world whilst achieving their qualifications.
- Entry Requirements: Typically, all applicants should have BCC at ‘A level’, (104 UCAS) or international equivalent. Relevant industry experience is also beneficial but not required. All programs follow an overall IELTS test result of 6.5 - 7.0, including a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-tests.
