Newcastle University is located in the North East of England, and has a global reputation for high quality teaching and cutting edge research. Academic Programs
Undergraduate Programs (Engineering Foundation)
- Foundation Year (BEng & MEng) in Marine Technology (1 year): This program is for those students who have shown that they have the ability to undertake a degree in marine technology but do not possess the necessary qualifications for direct entry into Stage 1. After successful completion of the Foundation Year you may progress, as appropriate, on to any of the MEng or BEng marine technology programs.
Undergraduate Programs (Engineering)
- BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Marine Engineering: These degrees are concerned with engineering challenges specific to the marine environment. For example, the propulsion and auxiliary machinery of ships, and the power and control systems of other marine constructions such as oil platforms, sub-sea systems, and underwater and offshore vehicles.
- BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Naval Architecture: These degrees are directed towards the design, production and operation of ships and other marine vehicles. Naval Architecture is the widest ranging of the four Honours Options. The principles of stability, structures, response in a seaway, resistance and propulsion. These can be applied to vessels such as ferries, oil tankers, tugs, warships etc.
- BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Offshore Engineering: These degrees are geared to the demands of the offshore engineering industry, but with a solid basis in engineering fundamentals. They enable you to design and produce fixed and floating offshore oil and gas production installations, and the craft which service these and other offshore resource developments.
- BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Small Craft Technology: The techniques of small craft design represent a specialized application of marine technology. The growth in yachts, leisure craft and high-speed craft such as catamarans has been very rapid, and these degrees cover aspects of design and operation, including naval architecture, marine dynamics, propulsion and materials science.
Masters Programs (Engineering)
- MSc in Marine Engineering (Full time: 12 months, with preliminary year: 24 months): The program is designed for graduate engineers and is designed to produce master’s graduates with a well-founded knowledge and understanding of marine engineering, marine systems and the practical application of engineering on marine structures.
- MSc in Naval Architecture (Full time: 12 months): This program is designed to equip graduates with a well-founded knowledge and understanding of naval architecture and of its practical application. It allows a combination of subjects to be studied - ship design, performance, production, structures and propulsion.
- MSc in Offshore Engineering (Full time: 12 months, with preliminary year: 24 months): This program will provide you with a specialist education to enter this challenging professional field. It is aimed at graduate engineers who wish to specialize in the design, dynamic and strength analysis of fixed and floating offshore oil and gas platforms, and subsea systems including marine systems to produce renewable energy.
- MSc Offshore, Subsea and Pipeline Engineering (Full time: 12 months, with preliminary year: 24 months): MSc in Offshore, Subsea and Pipeline Engineering will deepen your knowledge, giving you the essential skills required to become a practising engineer in a demanding industry.
- MSc Subsea Engineering & Management (Full time: 12 months, part time: 24 or maximum 36 months): The MSc in Subsea Engineering and Management is an industrially relevant program designed for engineers wanting to increase their skills and knowledge of subsea engineering to masters' level. It has been developed in conjunction with firms in the subsea industry and comprises multi-disciplinary teaching, site visits, industrially based projects and visiting industrial lecturers to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of the course.
- MSc / PG Diploma / PG Certificate in Pipeline Engineering (Full time: 12 months, part time: 24 months): This program is collaboratively designed by industry and academia to meet the specific requirements of the oil and gas sector, covering both high-pressure offshore and onshore pipelines. The program is useful for engineers who are working in the pipeline industry and want to deepen their knowledge and undertake study at Masters Level.

Masters Programs (Singapore)
- MSc Marine Technology (International) - part time, 24 months minimum, 36 months maximum: This Marine Technology course is for maritime professionals working full time in Singapore. Our dynamic course responds to the challenges and demands of the global maritime sector. This course develops technical and managerial techniques essential to the global maritime sector. This course involves a mixture of distance learning and week-long intensive schools delivered in Singapore.
Masters Programs (Management)
- MSc Shipping and Logistics (Full time: 12 months, part time: 24 months): Shipping and Logistics MSc will prepare graduates from a broad range of disciplines for careers across the broad and exciting shipping and logistics sectors.
- MSc in Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Full time: 12 months): This program is designed to give students a thorough grounding in operations management and logistics. In addition it provides students with a more detailed knowledge of key management areas such as international business, human resources management, and managing and designing product development.
- MSc / PG Diploma in International Marine Environmental Consultancy (IMEC) (MSc - full time: 12 months, part time: 24 or 36 months): IMEC offers increased understanding of the coastal-marine environment (e.g. coastal systems, fisheries), with practical transferable experience (e.g. project management, business enterprise, coastal governance, flood risk, renewable energy planning); culminating in the opportunity to plan and execute projects in conjunction with regional leading consultancy firms.
Research & PhD Programs
- MRes in Technology in the Marine Environment (Full time: 12 months): The MRes in the Marine Environment is a Masters course in research set in the context of applied technology in the marine environment. It is aimed primarily for preparing students from a wide range of backgrounds for a career in an R&D environment in the marine related industries, either immediately on completion of the course, or after having continued to study for a PhD.
- MPhil and PhD in Marine Technology: The MPhil and PhD programmes in Marine Sciences provide research training, supervision and collaboration to international standards. You can choose a wide range of topics within the marine science research groups of Marine Hydrodynamics and Structures (MHS) and Sustainable Shipping and Marine Engineering (SSME). MPhil - full time: minimum 12 months, part time: minimum 24 months & PhD - full time: minimum 36 months, part time: minimum 72 months.

This means that the graduates are automatically recognized as satisfying the educational requirements leading to Chartered Engineer (CEng).
- Faculty: Students gave their lecturers excellent marks in the 2010 National Student Survey, which found that overall student satisfaction at Newcastle University was 87 per cent. The figure is well above the national average and several subject areas were rated first or second for student satisfaction in the whole of the UK.
- Worldwide Expeditions: A popular element of the University’s public lectures series is Tales from the Bush, presented by students who have travelled all over the world on summer expeditions supported by the University.
