Academic Programs

Undergraduate Programs (Engineering Foundation)

  • Foundation Year (BEng & MEng) in Marine Technology (1 year): This program is for those students who have shown that they have the ability to undertake a degree in marine technology but do not possess the necessary qualifications for direct entry into Stage 1. After successful completion of the Foundation Year you may progress, as appropriate, on to any of the MEng or BEng marine technology programs.

Undergraduate Programs (Engineering)

  • BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Marine Engineering: These degrees are concerned with engineering challenges specific to the marine environment. For example, the propulsion and auxiliary machinery of ships, and the power and control systems of other marine constructions such as oil platforms, sub-sea systems, and underwater and offshore vehicles.
  • BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Naval Architecture: These degrees are directed towards the design, production and operation of ships and other marine vehicles. Naval Architecture is the widest ranging of the four Honours Options. The principles of stability, structures, response in a seaway, resistance and propulsion. These can be applied to vessels such as ferries, oil tankers, tugs, warships etc.
  • BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Offshore Engineering: These degrees are geared to the demands of the offshore engineering industry, but with a solid basis in engineering fundamentals. They enable you to design and produce fixed and floating offshore oil and gas production installations, and the craft which service these and other offshore resource developments.
  • BEng Honours (3 years) and MEng Honours (4 years) in Marine Technology with Small Craft Technology: The techniques of small craft design represent a specialized application of marine technology. The growth in yachts, leisure craft and high-speed craft such as catamarans has been very rapid, and these degrees cover aspects of design and operation, including naval architecture, marine dynamics, propulsion and materials science.

Masters Programs (Engineering)

  • MSc in Marine Engineering (Full time: 12 months, with preliminary year: 24 months): The program is designed for graduate engineers and is designed to produce master’s graduates with a well-founded knowledge and understanding of marine engineering, marine systems and the practical application of engineering on marine structures.
  • MSc in Naval Architecture (Full time: 12 months): This program is designed to equip graduates with a well-founded knowledge and understanding of naval architecture and of its practical application. It allows a combination of subjects to be studied - ship design, performance, production, structures and propulsion.
  • MSc in Offshore Engineering (Full time: 12 months, with preliminary year: 24 months): This program will provide you with a specialist education to enter this challenging professional field. It is aimed at graduate engineers who wish to specialize in the design, dynamic and strength analysis of fixed and floating offshore oil and gas platforms, and subsea systems including marine systems to produce renewable energy.
  • MSc Offshore, Subsea and Pipeline Engineering (Full time: 12 months, with preliminary year: 24 months): MSc in Offshore, Subsea and Pipeline Engineering will deepen your knowledge, giving you the essential skills required to become a practising engineer in a demanding industry.
  • MSc Subsea Engineering & Management (Full time: 12 months, part time: 24 or maximum 36 months): The MSc in Subsea Engineering and Management is an industrially relevant program designed for engineers wanting to increase their skills and knowledge of subsea engineering to masters' level. It has been developed in conjunction with firms in the subsea industry and comprises multi-disciplinary teaching, site visits, industrially based projects and visiting industrial lecturers to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of the course.
  • MSc / PG Diploma / PG Certificate in Pipeline Engineering (Full time: 12 months, part time: 24 months): This program is collaboratively designed by industry and academia to meet the specific requirements of the oil and gas sector, covering both high-pressure offshore and onshore pipelines. The program is useful for engineers who are working in the pipeline industry and want to deepen their knowledge and undertake study at Masters Level.
  • MSc / PG Diploma / PG Certificate in Marine Technology Education Consortium (MTEC) - Full and Part Time, CPD: The Marine Technology Education Consortium courses offer innovative and flexible training for graduates working in the marine industry. You will develop advanced technical skills and business applications. The courses are part time and offer minimal

Newcastle University Features

Newcastle University’s graduates are amongst the most employable in the UK, with more than nine out of 10 in employment or further study within six months of graduating. Even in sectors that have been badly affected by global economic turmoil over the past few years, a Newcastle degree can be a passport to success. In computing science, for example, just 2.3 per cent of graduates described themselves as ‘unemployed’ six months after graduating, compared to a national average of 17 per cent.

  • Campus: The 50-acre main campus is located on the edge of Newcastle city centre, North East of England. This is the largest of the city centre campuses and represents the hub of Newcastle student life.
  • Accreditation: Newcastle University is a public university and UK Border Agency (UKBA) highly trusted student sponsor. Newcastle University Business School is accredited by the Association of MBA's (AMBA) since 1988. All of the bachelor’s degree engineering programs are accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the IMarEST, on behalf of the Engineering Council. This means that the graduates are automatically recognized as satisfying the educational requirements leading to Chartered Engineer (CEng).
  • Faculty: Students gave their lecturers excellent marks in the 2010 National Student Survey, which found that overall student satisfaction at Newcastle University was 87 per cent. The figure is well above the national average and several subject areas were rated first or second for student satisfaction in the whole of the UK.
  • Worldwide Expeditions: A popular element of the University’s public lectures series is Tales from the Bush, presented by students who have travelled all over the world on summer expeditions supported by the University. Students are encouraged to choose an expedition topic that is relevant to their studies.
  • Awards & Recognition: The most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the UK’s official survey of research quality in higher education, highlighted world-leading or internationally excellent research in all of the University’s submitted subject areas. The University was judged to have the best research management team in British higher education when its Research Office won first prize in the prestigious Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2010.
  • Careers Service: Recent initiatives launched by the University’s award-winning Careers Service include Rise Up, offering support to students wishing to start their own business.
