Established in 1964, Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is the largest public, two-year, degree granting college in New England with over 15,000 students enrolled across four campuses in Warwick, Lincoln, Providence and Newport, as well as a satellite location at the Westerly Education Center.
The Community College of Rhode Island offers programs in academic and vocational-technical areas as well as a full complement of programs and services for full and part-time students, for recent high school graduates and for older, adult learners.
CCRI awards Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, Associate in Applied Science in Technical Studies (and the Associate in Fine Arts degrees apart from several one-year certificates. Many graduating students transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Others complete career-oriented programs which can lead to immediate employment in technical fields.
CCRI's Division of Workforce Partnerships works in close collaboration with industry and business leaders to ensure the college’s offerings are meeting both current and future workforce needs. CCRI Received a Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education Designation by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) in 2021.
Workforce Training Programs
Maritime Career Training
- Maritime Careers Training (4 weeks, Newport Campus): CCRI, in partnership with the Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island, will be offering a 20-day training program that looks to increase ocean literacy, provide basic marine manufacturing experience, and help students find career opportunities in both afloat and ashore career tracks. Hands-on training will include marine systems, basic maritime Electrical, diesel/gasoline engines, plumbing, hydraulics, carpentry, OSHA maritime, and rigging. Graduates that complete this program can expect to begin careers as Merchant Mariners, Boat Builders, Production Workers, Industrial Painters, Marine Techs, Marine Electronics Installers, Shrink Wrappers, Wind Maintenance Techs and More. This program is free for all that qualify and are accepted.
Maritime Trades Programs
- Maritime Electrical (200 hours): In collaboration with the Westerly Education Center and Electric Boat, CCRI enrolls students in maritime electrical courses that prepares students to work at Electric Boat. This course will prepare participants with the electrical skills and knowledge for industry employment requiring the application of basic electrical knowledge in maritime manufacturing environments. This program is free for all that qualify and are accepted.
- Maritime Pipefitting (240 hours): In collaboration with the Westerly Education Center and Electric Boat, CCRI enrolls students in maritime pipefitting courses that prepares students to work at Electric Boat. This course prepares participants with the pipefitting skills and knowledge for industry employment requiring the application of basic maritime pipefitting knowledge in manufacturing environments dedicated to the production of vessels for the U.S. Navy. This program is free for all that qualify and are accepted.
- Maritime Sheet Metal (200 hours): In collaboration with the Westerly Education Center and Electric Boat, CCRI enrolls students in maritime sheet metal courses that prepares students to work at Electric Boat. This course will prepare participants with the technical skills and knowledge for industry employment requiring the application of basic sheet metal knowledge in manufacturing requirements dedicated to the production of vessels for the U.S. Navy. This program is free for all that qualify and are accepted.
Maritime OSHA Programs
- Maritime OSHA 10: This training will provide the basics of OSHA guidelines to better the safety of the working environment. Every student who completes the entirety of this training will receive their Nationally Recognized OSHA card.
