The fully online, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Approved, VIRSEC Maritime English Tests (METs) are designed to assist both Ship Operators and employers make effective recruiting and training decisions by assessing the English language understanding and skills of crew at Ratings (Deck & Engine), Junior Officers (Deck & Engine) Senior Officers (Deck & Engine).
The English Tests are designed from the ground up using approved guidelines from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO Model English Course 3.17); IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCPs); and consistent with the functional framework set out by the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW).
The Maritime English Test for Ratings (Deck & Engine) & Non-Crew Members of Cruise Ships are designed to assess candidate’s English language competence between the levels of Beginner and Elementary - CEFR (Europe): A1 to A2 and ILR (United States): Level 0 to 1.
The Maritime English Test for Junior Officers (Deck & Engine) are designed to assess candidate’s English language competence between the levels of Lower Intermediate and Intermediate - (CEFR (Europe): B1 to B2 and ILR (United States): Level 1+ to 2+.
The Maritime English Test for Senior Officers (Deck & Engine) are designed to assess candidate’s English language competence between the levels of Upper-Intermediate and Advanced -CEFR (Europe): C1 to C2 and ILR (United States): Level 3 to 4.
