AMSA Engine Room Watch and Able Seafarer - Engine Rating Requirements (General, Sea Service and STCW) for Australian International Seafarers
This section includes the AMSA International Qualifications and requirements under STCW for Engine Ratings. Engine ratings include Engine Room Watch Rating duties or functions on vessels of any size in any operating area; and Able Seafarer - Engine rating duties or functions on vessels of any size in any operating area.
Engine Room Watch rating duties or functions means the tasks, duties and responsibilities of a rating forming part of an engineering watch that are specified as competencies in STCW Code table A-II/4, column 1 (STCW Ratings Forming Part of an Engineering Watch). Able Seafarer - Engine rating duties or functions means the tasks, duties and responsibilities of an able seafarer - engine that are specified as competencies in STCW Code table A-III/5, column 1 (STCW Able Seafarer Engine).

General Requirements for Engine Ratings
- To be eligible for Engine Rating certificate you must meet medical, sea service and course requirements.
- The requirements depend on whether you are getting a certificate for the first time or revalidating an existing certificate.
AMSA Engine Room Watch Rating Requirements
- Person must be at least 18 years old
- Have complete both - an approved program of study, that includes vocational training (that complies with STCW Code section A-III/4); and at least 2 months documented qualifying seagoing service; OR
- At least 6 months documented qualifying sea service that includes vocational training (that complies with STCW Code section A-III/4)
Engine Room Watch Rating STCW & Other Certificate Requirements
- Have completed an approved course of Basic Safety Training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/1 paragraph 2)
- Have completed Security awareness training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/6 paragraph 4)
AMSA Able Seafarer - Engine Requirements
- Person must be at least 18 years old
- Have completed an approved program of study that includes vocational training (that complies with STCW Code section A-III/4 and section A-III/5); AND
- Have completed at least 6 months documented qualifying seagoing service while qualified to serve as a rating forming part of an engine room watch on an appropriate vessel
Able Seafarer - Engine STCW & Other Certificate Requirements
- Have completed an approved course of Basic Safety Training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/1 paragraph 2)
- Have completed security awareness training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/6 paragraph 4)
- Hold a certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats (that complies with STCW Code table A-VI/2-1)
