AMSA Navigational Watch and Able Seafarer - Deck Rating Requirements (General, Sea Service and STCW) for Australian International Seafarers
This section includes the AMSA International Qualifications and requirements under STCW for Deck Ratings. Deck ratings include Navigational Watch rating duties or functions on vessels of any size in any operating area; and Able Seafarer - Deck rating duties or functions on vessels of any size in any operating area.
Navigational Watch rating duties or functions means the tasks, duties and responsibilities of a rating forming part of a navigational watch that are specified as competencies in STCW Code table A-II/4, column 1 (STCW Ratings Forming Part of a Navigational Watch). Able seafarer - deck rating duties or functions means the tasks, duties and responsibilities of an able seafarer - deck that are specified as competencies in STCW Code table A-II/5, column 1 (STCW Able Seafarer Deck).

General Requirements for Deck Ratings
- To be eligible for Deck Rating certificate you must meet medical, sea service and course requirements.
- The requirements depend on whether you are getting a certificate for the first time or revalidating an existing certificate.
AMSA Navigational Watch Rating Requirements
- Person must be at least 18 years old
- Have completed both - an approved program of study, that includes vocational training (that complies with STCW Code section A-II/4); and at least 2 months documented qualifying seagoing service; OR
- At least 6 months qualifying sea service that includes vocational training (that complies with STCW Code section A-II/4).
Navigational Watch Rating STCW & Other Certificate Requirements
- Have completed an approved course of Basic Safety Training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/1 paragraph 2)
- Have completed Security awareness training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/6 paragraph 4)
- Hold an approved steering certificate
AMSA Able Seafarer - Deck Requirements
- Person must be at least 18 years old
- Have completed an approved program of study that includes vocational training (that complies with STCW Code section A-II/4 and section A-II/5); AND
- Have completed at least 12 months documented qualifying seagoing service while qualified to serve as a rating forming part of a navigational watch
Able Seafarer - Deck STCW & Other Certificate Requirements
- Have completed an approved course of Basic Safety Training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/1 paragraph 2)
- Have completed security awareness training (that complies with STCW Code section A-VI/6 paragraph 4)
- A certificate in Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats (that complies with STCW Code table A-VI/2-1)
- A steering certificate
