Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) Engineer Officer Class 4 CoC Requirements (General, Sea Service and STCW)
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) Certificate of Competency Engineer Officer Class 4 entitles the holder to serve in machinery spaces as - officer in charge of a watch, irrespective of the size of the ship’s propulsion power; second engineer officer on ships with propulsion power of up to 750 kW and fishing vessels irrespective of the size of the ship’s propulsion power; and chief engineer on ships with propulsion power of up to 750 kW and fishing vessels with propulsion power of up to 10,000 kW.
Holders of the Certificate of Competency Engineer Officer Class 4 who have at least 6 months of relevant seagoing service which has been served after the issuance of the certificate, may serve as chief engineer on fishing vessels and non-seagoing ships with propulsion power of up to 1,500 kW if education for attaining a higher Certificate of Competency Engineer Officer has been completed and the company performs a documented final evaluation on the vessel in question.

This qualification enables you to work as Engineer Class 4 officer in charge of a watch unlimited, chief and second engineer officer on ships with propulsion power of up to 750 kW
General Requirements for Engineer Officer Class 4
- Age: 18 years
- Documented seagoing service and education in accordance with the relevant certificate class
- A valid medical certificate for employees on ships
- Competence shall be assessed by an assessor
Norwegian Engineer Officer Class 4 Requirements
The NMA Certificate of Competency Engineer Officer Class 4 entitles the holder to work as:
- Officer in charge of a watch Unlimited
- Second engineer officer on ships with propulsion power of up to 750 kW
- Chief engineer on ships with propulsion power of up to 750 kW
Education and Training Requirements
- In order to be issued with the Certificate of Competency Engineer Officer Class 4, completed education and a passed exam covering the areas of Annex IV table A-III/1.
Norway Engineer Officer Class 4 Sea Service Requirements
- At least 36 months of combined training in workshop skills and seagoing service, 30 months of which shall have been served in the engine department included at least six months of engine-room watchkeeping duties that covers the areas specified in Annex IV table A-III under the supervision of a qualified officer, and where at least one month has been served after the issuance of a diploma; OR
- Seagoing service pursuant to the requirements below must be a part of an approved training program with on-board training, included training in engine-room watchkeeping duties that covers the areas specified in Annex IV table A-III/4. Training shall be documented in an approved training record book. Before seagoing service in accordance with the duties may be performed, education covering the areas of Annex IV table A-III/1 shall be successfully completed.
- At least 12 months of combined training in workshop skills and seagoing service; OR
- At least six months of seagoing service with a certificate of apprenticeship as Able Seafarer Engine.
