Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) Deck Officer Class 3 CoC Requirements (General, Sea Service and STCW)
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) Certificate of Competency Deck Officer Class 3 entitles the holder to serve as the officer in charge of a watch on ships, irrespective of gross tonnage and trade area; and chief mate on ships of up to 3,000 gross tonnage in an unrestricted trade area. Holders of the Certificate of Competency Class 3 who have turned 20 years and in addition have at least 12 months of seagoing service as officer in charge of a watch may serve as master on ships of less than 500 gross tonnage in North Sea and Baltic trade.
Holders of the Certificate of Competency Deck Officer Class 3 who have turned 20 years and have at least 36 months of seagoing service as officer in charge of a watch on seagoing ships of 500 gross tonnage or more, may serve as master on ships of up to 3000 gross tonnage. Such seagoing service is reduced to 24 months if at least 12 months are served as chief mate on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more.

This qualification enables you to work as Deck Officer Class 3 in Norway registered ships of various sizes and areas
General Requirements for Deck Officer Class 3
- Age: 18 years (20 years for masters)
- Documented seagoing service and education in accordance with the relevant certificate class
- A valid medical certificate for employees on ships
- Competence shall be assessed by an assessor
Norwegian Deck Officer Class 3 Requirements
The NMA Certificate of Competency Deck Officer Class 3 entitles the holder to work as:
- Officer in Charge of a Watch Unlimited
- Chief Mate 3000 GT Unrestricted Area
- Master 500 GT North Sea and Baltic Trade (with certain conditions such as age and experience - see above)
- Master 3000 GT (with certain conditions such as age and experience - see above)
Education and Training Requirements
- In order to be issued with the Certificate of Competency Deck Officer Class 3, completed education and a passed exam covering the areas of Annex III table A-II/2 is required in addition to the requirements of Deck Officer Class 5 & Class 4.
Norway Deck Officer Class 3 Sea Service Requirements
- At least 36 months of seagoing service on seagoing ships of 15 metres in overall length or above, where at least six months include Navigational watchkeeping covering the areas of Annex III table A-II/4 under the supervision of a qualified officer, and where at least one month has been served after the issuance of a diploma. OR
- At least 12 months of seagoing service or at least six months of seagoing service with a certificate of apprenticeship as Able Seafarer Deck or fisherman. The seagoing service must be a part of an approved training program on seagoing ships of 15 meters in overall length or above, including training in navigational watchkeeping duties that covers the areas specified in Annex III table A-II/4. Education covering the areas of Annex III table A-II/3 shall be successfully completed before seagoing service in accordance with this alternative may be performed.
