BAY OF PLENTY POLYTECHNIC

Established in 1982, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is a New Zealand government owned and funded institute of technology that offers the largest range of New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approved programs in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty area of New Zealand. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic has two campuses in Tauranga, a specialized road transport training facility and a small regional facility in Edgecumbe. Local and international students can pick from over 150 certificate, diploma and degree programs in a range of subjects, all taught by the industry experienced tutors.

Every program has its theoretical content, which is usually taught in a classroom. Most of the courses are very applied in nature and involve hands-on components; you could spend time in an automotive workshop, in a server room, or out on the ocean. The polytechnic offers 88 full programs and 38 short awards. It also offers degree programs and pathways in partnership with other tertiary education providers.

Bay of Plenty is a government tertiary institution and provides Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) approved maritime certifications, licensing and programs. The Transport & Distribution programs and training approved by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

Training Programs

Transport & Distribution Programs

  • National Certificate in Distribution Level 2 (12 weeks, Full-time): This course of study will show you how to safely handle goods coming from producers and importers and prepare you for heaps of further study options that can enhance your employment and career opportunities. During the program you'll visit a range of local companies and through work experience; you’ll get to practice your skills in the workplace. When you get the job, you can continue part-time study to complete the Level 3 National Certificate, while you continue to work.
  • National Certificate in Road Transport Management (Operations) Level 4 (Flexible, Part-time): The program will equip you with new skills; managing staff and vehicles, and interacting with customers, regulatory authorities and industry groups. It also leads on to a heap of other study options that will improve your career prospects.
  • National Certificate in Distribution Level 3 (32 weeks, Part-time): This course of study will also give you the opportunity to study at a higher level and boost your career opportunities. Study while you work to gain this level 3 national certificate. The courses are offered online with access to our experienced tutors, using your workplace tasks for assessment, as well as attending class for short blocks.

Maritime Short Programs

  • Restricted Radar Observer's Certificate (5 days): Learn how to set up, tune and obtain a position and all the basic theory of operation. You'll need this certificate if you want to gain your ILM, NZOM, or NZOW.
  • General Radio Telephone Operator's Certificate (3 days, Full-time): This program is suitable for radio operators using single side band or VHF ship radio stations. The certificate is compulsory for New Zealand Offshore Master (NZOM) and Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 95 (STCW 95) candidates.
  • Inshore Launchmaster (ILM) – 3 weeks, Full-time: The program, which is a mandatory requirement of Maritime New Zealand (MNZ), will prepare you for examination for the Inshore Launchmaster Certificate of Competency. The ILM program includes three courses – Nautical; Engineering; and Restricted Radar Observer’s Certificate.
  • Local Launch Operator (LLO) – 3 weeks, Full-time: This program provides you with the knowledge necessary to take command of a restricted limits ship, up to 20 meters in length, in an enclosed limit or a nominated safe haven in the inshore limit. Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) will endorse your certificate with the name of vessels to be used and the intended area of operation. The Local Launch Operator Certificate is valid for five years for the named vessel/vessels and may be renewed provided conditions are met.
  • Marine Engineer Class 6 (5 days): This program is run in conjunction with the Inshore Launchmaster ILM and LLO Engineering course. This program will enable you to describe the systems, safety devices and emergency procedures associated with the various engines; machinery and equipment commonly found on coastal vessels, and prepare you for the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Marine Engineer Class 6 examination.
  • Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW 95 Basic) – 7 days: If you want to get a job on a cruise ship, super yacht, oil rig, merchant vessel or in the commercial maritime industry, you'll need this certificate. There's no sea time involved and the whole course takes just a week to complete.
  • Maritime Radio Operator's Certificate (2 half days): This program prepares you to operate a marine radio to Ministry of Economic Development standards and obtain a license to do so. Previously known as the Restricted Radio Telephone Operators Certificate.
