Established in 2021, MAST Academy is an Auckland-based New Zealand organization working together with learners and employers to produce skilled and knowledgeable people with successful careers and businesses. MAST Academy aims to be the premier center of excellence in marine, composite, and specialized training, meeting and exceeding industry standards.

MAST Academy is a member of the New Zealand Marine Industry Association (NZMI), the Composites Association of New Zealand (CANZ), Marina Operators Association, and Outdoor Fabric Products Association of New Zealand, which gives an indication of commitment to, and connectedness with the industry.

The academy has a good set of services, such as worksite-based training arrangements for learners and employers, off-job as well as on-job training delivery, and also manages the assessment as well as evaluation of the learners. The academy provides precious information and advice to the individual and businesses.

MAST Academy also takes a leadership role in the need of the industry in regard to addressing the skills and training needs. Apprentices are expected to acquire not only apprenticeships in marina operations and boatyard engineering but also boat building, marine systems engineering, mechanical powerboat systems, marine finishing techniques, marine electronics, and sail making.

Training Programs

Boatbuilding Apprenticeships

  • Boatbuilding Composites Apprenticeship (57 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or construct new vessels using composite materials.
  • Boatbuilding Custom Alloy Apprenticeship (48 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or construct new alloy vessels and refit and maintain older alloy vessels.
  • Boatbuilding Production Alloy Apprenticeship (40 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or construct new alloy production boats.
  • Boatbuilding Production Composite Apprenticeship (43 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or construct new composite production boats.
  • Boatbuilding Wood Apprenticeship (55 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or construct new vessels using wooden materials. 

Sail Making Apprenticeships

  • Composite Sail Making Apprenticeship (28 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work unsupervised as composite sail makers.

Marine Coatings Apprenticeships

  • Marine Coatings Exterior Apprenticeship (32 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in unsupervised roles in the exterior coating of refit vessels or new vessels.
  • Marine Coatings Interior Apprenticeship (30 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in unsupervised roles in the interior coating of refit vessels or new vessels.

Marine Electrical & Electronics Apprenticeships

  • Marine Electrical Electronics Apprenticeship (36 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who are able to install Electrical and electronics systems. 

Marine Interiors Apprenticeships

  • Marine Interiors Apprenticeship (38 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to construct and install cabinetry including equipment, and fittings for a marine vessel.

Power Boat Systems Apprenticeships

  • Power Boat Systems Rigging Apprenticeship (30 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who are able to operate as a power boat rigger.
  • Power Boat Systems Servicing and Repair (Technician) Apprenticeship (42 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who are able to operate as technicians specialising in servicing and repair on power boat engines and other systems.

Yacht Apprenticeships

  • Yacht Rigging Apprenticeship (26 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work unsupervised as yacht riggers.
  • Yacht Spar Making Composite Apprenticeship (36 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people working with yacht spars who have the knowledge and skills to work unsupervised as composite spar makers.

Marina Apprenticeships

  • Marina Facilities Boatyard Operations Apprenticeship (24 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills, and are able to work safely within the regulatory framework, in the maintenance and operation of boatyard facilities.
  • Marina Facilities Marina Operations Apprenticeship (24 months): The aim of this programme is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills, and are able to work safely within the regulatory framework, in the maintenance and operation of boatyard facilities.
