Established in 2010 through a merger between Vaxjo University and University of Kalmar, Linnaeus University (LNU - Linnéuniversitetet) is a state university with its campuses located at Vaxjo and Kalmar in the Smaland region of Sweden. LNU offers over 150 degree programs and 2,000 single-subject courses varied subjects within arts and humanities, health and life sciences, the social sciences, the natural sciences, technology, and business and economics.

Established in 1842, Kalmar Maritime Academy has over 700 students who will become Master Mariners, Chief Engineers, Operating Technicians, and Engineers. Kalmar Maritime Academy also offers a comprehensive range of courses for professional mariner. Please note that the language of instruction for all courses is Swedish. Courses in English can be given upon request.

Academic and Training Programs

Business School Programs

  • Master of Social Science or Master of Science in Business and Economics with specialization in Business Process Control and Supply Chain Management: Fronts in Management Accounting & Process- based Control
  • Master of Social Science or Master of Science in Business and Economics with specialization in Business Process Control and Supply Chain Management: Fronts in Logistics & Supply Chain Management
  • Duration is of 2 years full-time in English - and also available as 1 year program
  • This program combines logistics and management accounting, which is unique. There is a great need for graduates who understands value creation with the end consumer in focus through cooperation and integration within the organization as well as with other companies.

Merchant Marine Programs

  • BSc in Nautical Science (4 years, Swedish): The nautical science training is broad and you read everything from seaway rules to survival technology and leadership. The program aims to train deck professionals for service in both national and international merchant shipping. The degree is a vocational degree and the degree gives the students a nautical knowledge to be able, after a few years' professional experience in merchant shipping, to be operationally responsible for crew, ships, Cargo and passengers as Master.
  • BSc in Marine Engineering (4 years, Swedish): Working as a marine engineer means that you are responsible for the ship's machinery and technical equipment on merchant ships. The program aims to train marine engineers for service in both national and international merchant shipping. A degree in marine engineering is a vocational degree and the program degree gives the student a technical knowledge to, after a few years of professional activity in merchant shipping, be operationally responsible for crew, ships and machinery as Chief Engineer.

  • BSc in Energy Technology with Specialization in Operation and Maintenance Engineering (3 years, Swedish): Operational and maintenance technology is the program for those who want to work in an industry that is constantly evolving and where the demand for new skills is great. The program is aimed at those who want to work with the operation and maintenance of energy-producing plants. You get a broad technical competence to be able to manage and optimize a safe operation with regard to both economy and sustainability.

Programs with Swedish Maritime Academy

  • BSc in Business Administration with Specialization in Cruise Management (3 years, English): The Program trains the participants for analyzing, developing and leading positions in the regional, national and international tourism industry. The education is given in English and is aimed at students who want to work with tourism development and tourism entrepreneurship in an international context. The program's specialization in Cruise Management provides basic and advanced courses in tourism science, certification courses for work on ships and degree in business administration and prepares for leading positions in shipping companies and cruise tourism.
  • Master’s Degree Project Program in Maritime Science: The student must independently write a degree project in maritime science based on scientific principles during consultation with a supervisor. The student studies for the specialization relevant scientific work, applies appropriate methods for collecting and analyzing data, and discusses results obtained in relation to previously known conditions. The work is reported in a written report adapted to accepted scientific practice and presented, and discussed, at a seminar.

Professional Courses

  • Ships officer Class VII: The course comprises 40 higher education credits and includes, among other things, cargo handling, stability, navigation, safety and ship machinery. The teaching consists of theory mixed with practical elements such as laboratory work and exercises in the school's simulators and on the school's training vessels. After completing the course and qualifying for service requirements, Ships officer Class 7 qualification can be obtained.
  • Engineer Officer Class VII: The course comprises 40 higher education credits. In addition to ship technical subjects, environmental and Maritime Safety technology is also included. The teaching consists of theory mixed with practical elements such as laboratory work and Simulator exercises. After completing the course and qualifying for service requirements, Engineer Class 7 qualification can be obtained.
  • Electro Technical Officer (ETO): This course is, together with a degree in marine engineering is a foundation certificate for the qualifications Electro Technical Officer according to STCW A-III / 6 and Electro Technical Rating (ship electrician) according to STCW A-III / 7.
  • On Board Training Course (39 credits): This training is for Ships Officer Class VII to have their sea training requirements for the license. All parts of the course must have been examined during the last two years. STCW reference - Section A II/3, Section A IV/2, Section A V/11, Section B V/1.
