virsec maritime cyber security

Shipping relies largely on digital solutions for everyday tasks and, connectivity through the internet between Servers and IT/OT systems increases the potential cyber vulnerabilities and risks. Cyber security is crucial to the shipping industry because of its effect on personnel, ship, passengers, company, and cargo. Cyber risk management must be an integral part of the safety and security culture of the maritime industry.

In 2017, the IMO issued MSC-FAL.1/Circ.3 Guidelines on maritime cyber risk management. The IMO Maritime Safety Committee then adopted these guidelines through Resolution MSC.428(98) Maritime Cyber Risk Management in Safety Management Systems. The resolution encourages administrations to ensure the appropriate management of the cyber risks in existing safety management systems.

The CPD-approved, internationally recognized Cyber Security Awareness for Seafarers Online Course examines cyber security, existing cyber threats, the vulnerabilities onboard ship IT and OT systems, and the exploitation by offenders. This course examines the measures required to mitigate and defend against these types of threats and provide seafarers with the basic knowledge and training to enable them to safeguard onboard equipment.
