Founded in 1969 and located in Calais, Maine, Washington County Community College (WCCC) was formerly known as Washington County Vocational Technical Institute. From 1989 till 2003 it was known as Washington County Technical College. In 2003, the Maine Technical College System became the Maine Community College System, and WCTC became Washington County Community College in recognition of its expanded mission in serving the people of Washington County and Maine.

Washington County Community College has recently earned a spot among the top 150 community colleges in the United States, recognized for its strong commitment to student success and educational quality. The college currently enrolls around 450 students in its one-year certificate and two-year degree programs, which are designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment in various fields. Additionally, many students begin their studies at WCCC with plans to transfer to four-year universities, seeking to further their education and career opportunities.

WCCC also offers non-degree professional and continuing education opportunities. Many courses are designed to offer convenience through hybrid and online modalities to prepare you for professional career for many in-demand occupations.

Training Programs

USCG Captains License Program

  • OUPV Captain License Course (Online/Self-paced): This 56-hour 6 pack license credential is great for mariners who wish to use their own boat as a business; or wish to work in the charter, sport fishing, or passenger vessel industries. An OUPV license is an entry-level master credential that allows mariners to operate power or sailing vessels up to 100 Tons in size, carrying no more than 6 paying passengers. Upon successful completion of this course mariners will not have to test with the USCG and can immediately begin the application process. Course content include - Rules of the Road , Deck General, Safety, Terrestrial Navigation, Charting, Emergency, Response, Boat Handling, Seamanship, and Maritime Law.

Marine Programs

  • Electric Boat Motor Technician Training: Develop practical knowledge of fundamental Electrical theory, propulsion, and diagnostics through this immersive, hands-on course. Delivered in person over three days, the 16-hour program provides direct experience with electric outboard installation, maintenance, and repair. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a digital badge recognizing their expertise. Ideal for boatyard technicians and professionals with experience in boat maintenance and repair.
  • Coastal Fisheries & Marine Technology: Classes are a combination of online and in-person and run across various timeframes, including multi-day long, weekend, and 8 & 10-week modules. Hands-on and relevant training in the labs, plus multiple opportunities for live experiences at industry locations throughout the region. With added industry-recognized credentials such as PADI Diver Certification, OUPV Captain’s License, and ABYC Certifications.

Logistics Courses

  • Foundation Level Certified Logistics Associate: In partnership with Manufacturing Skills Standard Council – online training with instructor-led material.
  • Mid-Level Certified Logistics Technician: In partnership with Manufacturing Skills Standard Council – online training with instructor-led material.
