Transport Malta Approved Recreational, Commercial, Shore-based and STCW Courses and Training in Malta
Established in 2007 and located at Il-Marsa in Malta, Malta International Powerboat and Sailing School (MIPSS) was the first private school to be approved by Transport Malta. The school offers offered internationally recognized courses and certification either through the MCA approved RYA and /or International Yacht Training (IYT).
The School is run by a cooperative of instructors each an expert in their subject, with vast experience in the Military (Navy) or as Commercial Masters. The theory courses are based in the heart of Valletta's Grand Harbor.
The school offers recreational, commercial, shore-based and STCW training programs for the mariners interested in enhancing or learning new skills and licenses.
Training Programs
Recreational Programs
- Mediterranean Skipper: Up to 24 meters & up to 35 miles from any shore
- Yacht Master Offshore: Internationally recognized, this course allows you to be a Master of 200-ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore.
- Personal Watercraft Course: Launching, handling and recovery skills, passage planning and decision making, collision avoidance and orientation at sea.
- Maltese Nautical License: The course leading to a basic license to drive up to 24m vessels in Maltese waters for recreational use only.
Commercial Courses
- Boatman: Dual qualification to act as Master and/or Engineer of vessels less than 10 meters, capable of carrying 12 passengers or less. Within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
- Boatmaster Grade 1: Qualification to serve as Master on a commercial vessel of less than 24 meters in length. Within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
- Boatmaster Grade 2: Dual qualification to act as Master and/or Engineer of vessels less than 12 meters in length and with engines up to 250 kW.
- General Purpose Hand: Candidates can crew any commercial vessel as a General Purpose Hand in accordance with the manning requirements. Within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
- Master of Yachts 200GT Ocean (Unlimited): This course will allow you to be - Master of 200 ton vessel all oceans, Chief Mate of 500 ton vessel all Oceans, Chief Mate of 200 ton vessel all oceans, OOW (Officer of the Watch) of a 500 ton vessel all oceans.
- Master of Yachts Power 200GT Offshore: This course will allow you to be - Master of 200 ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore, Chief Mate of 500 ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore, Chief Mate of 200 ton vessel all oceans Officer of the Watch of a 500 ton vessel all oceans.
Shore Based Courses
- GMDSS | VHF | SRC | DSC: The course provides VHF Radio and SRC training for the entire spectrum of VHF radio communications for recreational and professional boating.
STCW Training
- STCW Basic Safety Course: Basic First Aid, Basic Fire Prevention & Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Personal & Social Responsibilities, and Proficiency in Security Awareness.
- STCW Basic Safety Course (Refresher): For those who already have done STCW Basic Safety Course.
