Ship Handling, Maltese Commercial Vessels Regulation (CVR), STCW and Other Courses in Malta

Established in 2010 and located Birzebbuga in Malta, MaritimeMT is a cooperative of members composed of highly qualified professionals such as Master Mariners with vast experience and knowledge of the sector. MaritimeMT Malta is run by MMRTC Society Co-operative Ltd, the training arm of the Malta Maritime Pilots Cooperative Society. MaritimeMT is DNVGL Certified and has full accreditation from Transport Malta.

A number of courses for pilots and the local Maritime Industry have been carried out by MaritimeMT in conjunction with Glasgow Nautical College. Co-financed by EU Funds, National Funds and Private Funds, the training centre encompasses two of the most advanced full mission bridge simulators in Europe. Other facilities include Kelvin Hughes MantaDigita ECDIS systems for the ECID labs to making it possible for pilots to train on this IMO compliant computer-based navigation information system, and lecture rooms.

The Full Mission Bridge Simulator I is a state-of-the-art Det Norske Veritas (DNV)-certified Marin Industries Compact Maneuvering Simulator (Mermaid 500) which is used for research, consultancy and training purposes. Full Mission Bridge (FBM2) simulator has a fully equipped bridge, with Automated Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA), a complete ECDIS system, together with all the controls and instrumentation required to con a vessel, both in open waters and in the confined areas of a port.

Training Programs

Ship Handling Courses

  • General Ship Handling: Various General Ship Handling courses may be customized to anyone’s requirements, depending on own experience and choices of vessels to be handled on the simulator.
  • Ship to Ship Transfer Training (18 hours): This Ship to Ship Transfer Training deals with Ship to Ship transfers of petroleum cargoes at sea.
  • Single Point Mooring Training (18 hours): The Single Point Mooring Training course consists of both theoretical and simulator practice where a candidate is trained on the safe approach of Single Point Mooring buoys.
  • Ultra Large Container Ship Handling (12 hours): The ultra large container ship handling training course provides simulator training on the CMA CGM 400 meter container ship capable of carrying more than 16,700 TEUs.
  • Tug Boat Assistance Simulator Training (18 hours): The course highlights the advantages of azimuth stern drive tugs in harbor, including their limitations.
  • Podded Propulsion Training (2 days): The Podded Propulsion training course covers all technical aspects of a podded system, from a tractor tug fitted with azimuth thrusters to a passenger ship fitted with Azi Pods.
  • Hands-on Training (1 day): This module is an essential part of the training, since candidates are given the opportunity to train hands-on, with experienced Pilots on various types/sizes of vessels entering and exiting the Ports.

Maltese Commercial Vessels Regulation (CVR)

  • General Purpose Hand (18 hours minimum): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in starting their career at sea and obtain a qualification to serve as Crew on a commercial vessel, in accordance with the manning requirements, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Boatman (30 hours minimum): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a dual qualification to serve as Master and/or Engineer of commercial vessels less than 10 meters, capable of carrying 12 passengers or less, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Boatmaster Grade 2 (42 hours minimum): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a dual qualification to serve as Master and/or Engineer of commercial vessels less than 12 meters and with engines up to 350kW, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Boatmaster Grade 1 (42 hours): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a qualification to serve as Master of commercial vessels less than 24 meters in length, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Mate Master Combined (120 hours): The Commercial Vessel Regulations – Mate/Master (restricted) training program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtaining a qualification to serve as Mate on a commercial vessels of 24 meters in length and over; Master on a commercial vessel of less than 50 meters in length operating within Maltese ports and the internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Master (42 hours minimum): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a qualification to serve as Master on a commercial vessel of 50 meters in length and over, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Engine Driver Grade 3 (24 hours): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a qualification to serve as Engine Driver on a commercial vessel of less than 500kW, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Engine Driver Grade 2 (35 hours minimum): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a qualification to serve as Engine Driver on a commercial vessel of less than 750kW, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
  • Engine Driver Grade 1 (42 hours minimum): This CVR training Program is designed for candidates interested in progressing further in their career and obtain a qualification to serve as Engine Driver on a commercial vessel of less than 1500kW, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
