Established in 2010 and located Birzebbuga in Malta, MaritimeMT is a cooperative of members composed of highly qualified professionals such as Master Mariners with vast experience and knowledge of the sector. MaritimeMT Malta is run by MMRTC Society Co-operative Ltd, the training arm of the Malta Maritime Pilots Cooperative Society. MaritimeMT is DNVGL Certified and has full accreditation from Transport Malta.

A number of courses for pilots and the local Maritime Industry have been carried out by MaritimeMT in conjunction with Glasgow Nautical College. Co-financed by EU Funds, National Funds and Private Funds, the training centre encompasses two of the most advanced full mission bridge simulators in Europe. Other facilities include Kelvin Hughes MantaDigita ECDIS systems for the ECID labs to making it possible for pilots to train on this IMO compliant computer-based navigation information system, and lecture rooms.

The Full Mission Bridge Simulator I is a state-of-the-art Det Norske Veritas (DNV)-certified Marin Industries Compact Maneuvering Simulator (Mermaid 500) which is used for research, consultancy and training purposes. Full Mission Bridge (FBM2) simulator has a fully equipped bridge, with Automated Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA), a complete ECDIS system, together with all the controls and instrumentation required to con a vessel, both in open waters and in the confined areas of a port.

Training Programs

Cadetship Courses

  • Ratings Forming Part of Navigational Watch (Deck Watchkeeping) (44 hours): It aims to give trainees the essential education & training for students to be able to work as Deck Watch Rating and to be able to form part of a Navigational Watch. The course is accredited and approved by Transport Malta, Flag Authority, as per STCW standards.
  • Efficient Deckhand (EDH Transport Malta) (5 days): The purpose of this course is to improve health and safety onboard ships by providing knowledge to students on how to implement safe working practices on board ships. Students shall be continuously assessed throughout the course & by means of a short oral examination by a Transport Malta examiner.
  • VHF SRC (16 hours): On completion of this course the trainee shall be familiar with GMDSS procedures, standard communication practices and the way messages are communicated via VHF sets.

Commercial Vessel Operations Courses

  • Boat Master Grade 1 / Mate (Restricted) Transport Malta (60 hours): Qualification to serve as Master on a commercial vessel of less than 24 meters in length, within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta. This certificate does not include an engineering qualification.
  • Mate/Master (Restricted) Transport Malta (120 hours): With the Mate/Master training course you will obtain a qualification to serve as Mate on commercial vessels of 24metres in length and over as well as a Master on commercial vessels of less than 50metres in length, operating within the ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta.
