Maritime Law & North Sea Energy Law Education at Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law
Founded in 1811, the University of Oslo (UiO), is the oldest and leading institution of research and higher education in Norway. Located in Oslo, the offers a world-class research and learning experience. With eight faculties, the number of graduates per year is approximately 4 500, of which 400 are doctorates. Though the official language is Norwegian, teaching is also provided. More than 40 Master’s Degree programs taught entirely in English along with more than 1200.
According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2009 (Shanghai Jiao Tong), the University of Oslo is ranked as No. 1 in Norway; No. 3 in Scandinavia; No. 18 in Europe; and No. 65 in the World. Three Nobel Prize winners indicate the quality of the research at the University.
The Faculty of Law in Oslo educates about 75% of all new legal candidates in Norway, and is the work- and studyplace for about 270 employees and 4 300 students. The faculty is divided into six Departments/Centers and is situated in the classical University buildings in the centre of Oslo. Established in 1963, Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law is divided in two departments: Department of Maritime Law, and Department of Petroleum and Energy law. The Institute has an international profile, with students, staff and associates from all over the world and offers three different student programs in English.
Academic Programs
Masters Programs
- Master of Laws (LLM) in Maritime Law (1.5 years, Full-time): The aim of the program is to provide thorough knowledge of the rules and framework of international commercial affairs related to shipping. All subjects are approached with an international perspective, although the program takes as its starting point the international rules seen from a Norwegian (Scandinavian) perspective. The LLM also aims to develop the student’s ability to see the practical effects and make comparative analyses of different sets of regulations within the complex field of maritime commercial activity.
- Master of Laws (LLM) in North Sea Energy Law (Executive Masters Part-time Program - 2 years): An advanced curriculum on energy law, from wellhead to burner tip, designed and structured specifically for legal professionals in the energy sector. The programme is a part-time LLM offered jointly by the University of Netherlands, University of Oslo, University of Aberdeen and, University of Copehagen.
- Entry Requirements: Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three-year duration. Under certain circumstances, other higher educational qualifications may be considered sufficient. The applicant needs a minimum average level of C or equal from previous education at university level to qualify for the program. It is highly recommended for applicants to have included law and/or shipping-related topics in their range of subjects. Topics that would strengthen your application would include, for example, nautical science, shipping and logistics, economics and insurance law. Relevant educational backgrounds for applicants to the program are: LLB or LLM or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree specializing in nautical studies, or logistics, or finance, or insurance or engineering. IELTS Score of minimum 6.0. For the part timeprogram, a two years experience is required.
