Established in 1981 and located in Fairhaven MA, Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) is private educational institution that offers its students an opportunity to pursue maritime career-oriented education. NMI provides required marine safety education, ship operation courses, Coast Guard license and document courses, as well as programs that grant students with a certificate and Merchant Marine Document upon completion.
In 2015, NMI opened the College of Maritime Science after receiving approval from the United States Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to deliver the Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science Degree.
NMI has trained over 65,000 mariner since its inception and has evolved from an exam preparation center to a fully fledged college offering an Associate Degree in Applied Nautical Science and continuing education courses for professional mariners. NMI is the training institute of choice for the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration and offers STCW compliant courses for mariners world-wide.
In the last thirty years since its founding in 1981, Northeast Maritime Institute has grown into one of the largest privately held maritime education facilities in the United States. The institute has educated thousands of mariner students at all levels of US Coast Guard licenses and documentation. The Institute continues to remain active with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Maritime Lecturer’s Association.

- Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science (2 years): NMI College of Maritime Science Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science is designed for individuals interested in a career at sea. This program also includes a Semester at Sea where you will gain real world experience and build professional relationships in the industry. The teaching model includes hands on learning, Simulator training, classroom theory and internship experiences for all styles of learning. NMI offers non-regimented maritime education and training that propels the students into the workforce through internships that matter because they spend (90) days at sea. This program is suitable for those who are interested in attending a trade school and interested in a career at sea, seeking a travel-oriented career, and also current mariners looking for career advancement.
