Established in 1963, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) promotes awareness, understanding, and the advancement and application of marine technology. This international society brings together businesses, institutions, professionals, academics, and students who are ocean engineers, technologists, policy makers, and educators.

The Society publishes a peer-reviewed journal - The Marine Technology Society Journal. It has 31 Professional Committees (technical interest groups). The society hosts several conferences yearly. And, it supports 13 Sections, which focus on events and programs unique to their geographic areas, enhancing networking among local colleagues, businesses, universities and government/military offices.

MTS offers opportunities for skills development and career advancement through conferences, workshops, online webinar series, and credentialing programs. MTS also provides a platform for professionals, researchers, and students to connect with others in marine technology. Opportunities include conferences, workshops, social events, and online forums.

Certification & Training Programs

Marine Tech & Scientist Certifications

  • Marine Technologist Certification: The Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech), Registered Marine Technologist (RMarTech), and Marine Technician (MarTech) are registered by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST), which has a Royal Charter from the United Kingdom, to award suitably qualified and experienced applicants Marine Technologist Registration (certification). CMarTech, RMarTech, and MarTech are professionals who harness, exploit, manage, use or apply marine technology in the pursuit of wealth creation and/or the provision of services in the marine sector. They are characterized by their ability to deal with complex issues, both systematically and creatively and can make sound judgments in the absence of complete data to develop solutions to problems and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Marine Scientist Certification: The Chartered Marine Scientist (CMarSci) and Registered Marine Scientist (RMarSci) are registered by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST), which has a Royal Charter from the United Kingdom, to award suitably qualified and experienced applicants Marine Scientist Registration (certification). CMarSci and RMarSci are professional scientists, who harness, exploit, manage, use or apply marine science in the pursuit of knowledge, understanding of the marine environment, wealth creation and/or the provision of services in the marine sector. They demonstrate effective leadership, using their specialist knowledge and broader scientific understanding to develop and improve the application of science and technology by scoping, planning, and managing multifaceted projects. CMarSci and RMarSci reflect the wide variety of sciences and their practice, recognizing high levels of skill and experience, independent of discipline.
