Merchant Marine Cadetship Programs & Ratings, Nautical Programs & Marine Engineering, STCW 2010 and Offshore Training for Professional Mariners at ALAM Malaysia
Located at Kuala Sungai Baru in Malaysia, Malaysian Maritime Academy (ALAM) was born out of a non-profit making body called MATES (Malaysian Training and Education for Seamen) Foundation, consisting of the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC Berhad), International Shipping Carriers Hong Kong, and the Malaysian Ministry of Transport as their main promoters, the foundation soon pioneered the Maritime Training Centre (MTC) in 1977.
ALAM's courses are structured to facilitate and equip students with competence beyond compliance and by working in collaboration with both local and international maritime-related organizations and institutions. ALAM creates a path heading towards a satisfying and assured career in the Malaysian and global maritime industry.
ALAM is the only MET institution in Malaysia that offers the full range of maritime shipping related training to seafarers serving onboard domestic as well as foreign going vessels and for shore based shipping personnel. This includes the training for new entrants (cadetship training) to the highest level of Master / Chief Engineer COC.
Training Programs
Seagoing Cadetship Program
- Diploma in Nautical Studies (3 years): Diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) aims to provide you the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to serve on merchant navy vessel of more than 500 gross tonnages. This program also helps to develop students to be a certified watchkeeping officer on unlimited voyage. The course will take a total of 3 years, spread over 3 phases. Students who enrol will need to complete all the mandatory phases required by the Director of Marine, under the Malaysian Marine Department. Upon successful completion of the training and passing all the qualifying prerequisites, you will be awarded with a Diploma in Nautical Studies and a Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch.
- Diploma in Marine Engineering (3 years): Specially designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to serve onboard a merchant navy vessel of more than 750kW, you will graduate as a certified watchkeeping engineering officer. This course will take a total of 3 years, spread over 3 phases. Students who enroll will need to complete all the mandatory phases required by the Malaysian Marine Department. Upon successful completion of the training and passing all the qualifying prerequisites, you will be awarded with a Diploma in Marine Engineering and be Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch.
Ratings Program
- Deck Ratings - STCW Program (5 months): Able Seafarers Deck (ASD) STCW 2010 Manila Amendment (regulation II/5) - In accordance with the STCW regulation II/5, this certification course best prepares you to serve on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more as deck ratings. It also provides you the required knowledge and skills as required by navigational watchkeeping, operation or maintenance and safety under the direct supervision of the master or officer in charge of a navigational watch.
- Deck Ratings - Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Program (10 months): SKM Level 3 Navigational Watchkeeping and Deck Operation - SKM is recognized by the industry as well as the government sectors in Malaysia, providing an exciting career and personal development path and aims to produce skilled and qualified workers to enhance the competitiveness of local industries in the world market. At the end of the program, you will be awarded with the Able Seafarers Deck (ASD) certificate recognized by the Malaysia Marine Department together with the SKM Level 3 from JPK.
Maritime Studies Program
- Diploma in Maritime Transportation and Logistics (DMTL) (2 years): This program focuses on the technical, operational, and regulatory aspects of maritime Cargo transportation and logistics management.
- Diploma in Maritime Business Administration (DMBA) (2 years): This program focuses on the aspects of maritime business administration and economics, providing the exposure to entrepreneurship and the analytical tools to enhance skills in critical thinking, problem solving and innovation.
- Diploma in Maritime Management (DMM) (2 years): This program focuses on the areas of maritime management, challenges and opportunities in shipping and port management.
- Diploma in Maritime Services (DMS) (2 years): This program focuses on integrated maritime services, including port management, shipping, insurance in shipping and transport logistics and warehouse management to facilitate the flow of supply chain systems.
Advanced Post Sea Courses
- Nautical Studies (26 weeks): ALAM prepares students for the combined Class 2 and Class 1 Certificate of Competencies (CoC) (Master & Chief Mate on Ship of 3000GT or more - A1MC). The Class 2 and Class 1 COCs allow students to be a Chief Officer and a Master to command on various types of ships worldwide, respectively. This program will prepare students to excel in their written examinations and to appear for an Oral examination conducted by the Malaysia Marine Department.
- Marine Engineering: The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare them for the certificate of competency for unlimited voyage and near coastal voyage.
