Academic Programs
Masters Programs - Marine Engineering & Naval Architecture
- MSc in Marine Engineering with Mechanical & Electrical Options (1 year): The Marine Engineering MSc is concerned with the design, analysis and operation of machinery and systems for merchant and naval ships. The program covers a wide range of engineering subjects relevant to the development and procurement of marine systems, and the program features two parallel mechanical and electrical streams. The UCL Department of Mechanical Engineering has seen, in recent years, unprecedented activity in refurbishing and re-equipping our laboratories. Highlights of this include an extensive workshop, four engine test cells of the highest specification, a new fluid mechanics laboratory, and a new towing tank for ship models. This MSc has been selected by the UK and Canadian Navies for the advanced training of its Marine Engineers. It also receives students from many other major maritime nations. Part time option available.
- Eligibility: A minimum of a second-class Honours degree from a UK university in a suitable engineering subject or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Candidates with qualifications in other subjects such as Physics will be considered. A knowledge of fluids and thermodynamics is essential and at least an understanding of basic electrical engineering. Some experience of the marine environment is suitable.
- MSc in Naval Architecture (1 year): This degree program offers an opportunity for study at an advanced level of the full range of naval architecture theory, analysis and design procedures for naval and merchant ships. The degree has several unique features. Direction and a significant portion of the teaching is carried out by staff seconded from the UK Ministry of Defense with recent experience of leading ship design teams. Many of the students on the course are from the UK MOD, and from the naval organizations of leading maritime countries. A major part of the degree involves working in a team with other Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering students to complete a comprehensive and unique Ship Design Exercise for presentation to course staff and to experienced ship designers from industry. Part time option available.
- Eligibility: A minimum of a second-class Honours degree from a UK university in a suitable engineering subject or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.
Masters Programs - Maritime Law
- Master of Laws (LLM) (FT 1 year, PT 2 years): The LLM program provides the ideal platform for you to develop expertise in specialist subject areas, and benefit from research-led teaching from the people who are recognized as experts in their field. You will study 180 credits to receive the LLM. If you choose to study part-time you will spread the credits over 2 years, or with flexible study, over 3-5 academic years. You can also earn a specialist LLM degree in a range of subject areas such as Maritime Law.
- Eligibility: Entrants to the UCL LLM must have ‘a good 2.1 with evidence of 1st class ability’ (or equivalent in other jurisdictions), and must provide evidence in their application of motivation, reasoning and analytical ability and communication skills.
