MCA, RYA, STCW and Other Yacht & Maritime Training Programs and Exam Prep Courses in Southampton and Dumbarton in Scotland
Located in Southampton, Hampshire, UK, Chieftain Training is a brand name used by two not-for-profit organizations, Southampton Boat Club Ltd. and STCW Ltd. Southampton Boat Club has existed informally for a couple of decades and was originally a small group of local sailors and power boaters. In 2018 the members formalized their group’s status into a Limited Company.
The Club organizes training courses for leisure boaters and those seeking work within the recreational boating industry. STCW Ltd is a training center and focuses on the provision of training for commercial seafarers.
Courses are run from four entirely separate venues, three centers are in the Southampton area (STCW Ltd at Willments Shipyard, Southampton Boat Club at Bitterne Park, and Fire Aid at Hythe) and are 5 to 25 minutes apart, the fourth center (Chieftain Training - Scotland) is in Dumbarton, Scotland.
Training Programs
Fast-Track Programs
- Super Yacht Deck Crew Course (5 weeks, Modules 1&2): The Fast-Track Superyacht deck crew full programme is a comprehensive package which focuses on four separate areas - Powerboating & PWC (Personal Water Craft), Seamanship & Navigation, and Marine Safety Training
- Super Yacht Stewardess (10 days): The Fast-Track Superyacht stewardess programme focuses on three separate areas - Basic Safety Training, Food Safety, and Seamanship.
- Pro Powerboat Helm (3 weeks): This Fast Track course is the ultimate power boat training programme for those power and Sports Boat drivers looking to gain qualifications.
- Professional Powerboat Skipper & Instructor (17 days): By the end of this programme successful candidates become qualified to instruct RYA Powerboat Level 1, Level 2, RYA ICC and CEVNI. They will also be qualified to skipper commercial RIBs and workboats, with up to 12 passengers on board, up to 20 miles offshore by day and night in any weather.
- MCA Powerboat Level 2 (commercial) (5 days): This training and certification will enable you to drive a small powered craft commercially in the UK on Coastal (and some inland) waters. It will also qualify you to drive a UK flagged commercial craft overseas.
Navigation & Officer Courses
- RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship: Short introduction to tides and charts for sailors or powerboaters
- RYA Day Skipper Shorebased: Comprehensive introduction to chart, tides, weather, seamanship and the Rules of the Road )
- RYA CEVNI Test: Short test on European Inland waterways regulations. Once passed, CEVNI can be endorsed to an ICC for those wanting to go boating in Europe
- RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased: Advanced course in coastal and offshore navigation for those who are already at Day Skipper standard and have some experience of putting it into practice.
- RYA Radar: one-day course covering the use of Radar for small craft.
- RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Shorebased: Advanced course in Astro-navigation and worldwide meteorology. This course principally deals with using the sextant and the relevant publications.
- Master 200 & OOW 500 CoC Oral Exam Preparation (5 days): On day 5 you will take a short 1:1 mock exam with our Instructor/Examiner. His feedback will be an essential part of your learning/review process before attending your actual exam, with the MCA.
- MCA Master 200 & OOW 500 Bespoke: Preparation towards the MCA oral exam for existing Yachtmasters.
