Based in Portchester, Hampshire, UK, the Marine Surveying Academy Ltd (MSA) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the International Institute of Marine Surveying Ltd (IIMS). As an organization, MSA provides the best quality marine surveyor-based training, although it operates in other specialist marine-related areas too, including marine accreditation.

MSA provides basic, day-long, short course training marine surveyors in a range of subjects and training and examinations leading to formal accreditation and qualifications certified by the IIMS.

MSA runs the highly specialized International Registered Marine Insulation Inspectors program and qualification, leading to accreditation and certification by IIMS. Similarly, MSA runs the course that leads to the Registered Marine Coatings Inspectors standard and qualification for those who survey and inspect complex superyacht coatings systems.

Qualification & Accreditation

  • RMCI Qualification: The Registered Marine Coatings Inspectors (RMCI) qualification was instigated by the Super Yacht Builders Association (SYBAss) in conjunction with the International Confederation of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) and working with the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS). Minimum entry requirements for the RMCI qualification are a NACE, FROSIO, or ICorr qualification plus 5 years’ experience of superyacht coatings. Those delegates who successfully complete and pass the RMCI course and examination are automatically entitled to one year’s free membership of the International Institute of Marine Surveying as a Technician Member.
  • eCMID Accreditation: The aim of the accreditation scheme is simply to assess competency in an objective manner against various specialist vessel types. Having gained accredited status, vessel inspectors/auditors are issued with an annual identify card embossed with their unique AVI number, the IIMS logo and a declaration that the accreditation is recognized by IMCA.
