Clyde Marine Training (CMT) is part of The Clyde Group based in Glasgow, Scotland and the group offers the services to both the marine and corporate sectors. Founded in 1986, Clyde Marine Training has grown to be the largest maritime training provider in the UK recruiting approximately 50% of the annual Trainee Officer intake for the British Merchant Navy today. Clyde Marine has ISO 9001 - 2008 Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Accreditation. It is also Corporate Marine Partner to the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

Clyde Marine Training has contracts with over 50 shipping companies to interview and select well motivated young people on their behalf and oversee their progress during their training.

The company has approximately 900 trainees within the system, undergoing training in colleges and universities in NAFC Marine Centre (Shetland School of Nautical Studies), City of Glasgow College (formerly Glasgow Nautical College), South Tyneside College (South Shields Marine School), Fleetwood Nautical Campus (Part of Blackpool and the Fylde College), LJMU Maritime Centre (formerly LJMU Lairdside Maritime Centre), Warsash Maritime SchoolSchool (of Solent University Southampton), and University of Plymouth. Everyone accepted for training will be sponsored by one of the client companies. Wherever possible, these Ship Owners and Managers will aim to offer full time employment, on successful completion of the training program.

Clyde Training Solutions provide a range of STCW courses for both the marine and offshore industries which fulfill the requirements of the STCW 2010 Amendments. The programs have emphasis on safety training and technical simulation courses which are geared towards various vessel types including offshore fleet, tankers, ferries and passenger vessels.

They also provide professional offshore training programs. The training centre in Clydebank has the latest simulated helicopter and fire fighting installations that allow candidates to perform training that complies with international standards

Cadetship Programs

Deck Officer Cadetship

  • Deck Officer HNC/HND Route (3 years): The HNC/D route comprises of three years of study broken down into five phases, three of which are spent at college and two at sea. During your college phases you will work towards gaining an HNC/D in nautical science, and whilst on your sea phases you will complete 12 months of practical experience.
  • Professional Diploma / Foundation Degree (3 years): The course follows the same structure as the HNC/D route, but on successful completion you will receive a Marine Operations qualification (FdSc).

Engineering Officer Cadetship

  • Engineering Officer HNC/HND Route (3 years): The HNC/D route comprises of three years of study broken down into five phases, three of which are spent at college and two at sea. There are several marine engineering courses to choose from. During your college phases you will work towards gaining an HNC/D in marine engineering, and whilst on your sea phases you will complete eight months of practical experience.
  • Professional Diploma / Foundation Degree(3 years): This course follows the same structure as the HNC/D route and there are a variety of marine engineering courses to choose from.
  • Engineering Post Graduate (1.5 years): If you have previously completed a relevant engineering degree such as BEng Mechanical Engineering or are a time spent Engineer, you may be eligible for the Post Graduate course. This course is tailored to your own experience and qualifications but lasts approximately 18 months and usually entails 9 months of sea time plus relevant industry courses to transfer your knowledge to the maritime sector.

Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Cadetship

  • HND/Foundation Degree (3 years): This route comprises of three years of study broken down into five phases, three of which are spent at college and two at sea. During your college phases you will work towards gaining an HND/Foundation Degree in Marine Electro-Technology, and whilst on your sea phases you will complete eight months of practical experience.

Pre-Cadetship

  • Marine Pre-Cadetship (1 year): This program is intended for those who wish to seek sponsorship through a training provider such as Clyde Marine Training, but don’t yet have the qualifications to do so. Throughout this one-year course candidates will study a range of subjects which will develop your skills through a mix of classroom and practical sessions. Graduates of this program will then be eligible to apply for places within the cadet sponsorship program, or to continue your education via the Foundation Degree cadetship.
