For over 30 years Chiltern Maritime - a part of the Viking Maritime - has remained the UK’s foremost provider of Merchant Navy Officer Cadetships. Approved by Government, we have been assisting commercial marine organizations to invest into Deck, Engineering and Electro-Technical Officer Cadets, qualifying some of the highest caliber graduates, highly sought after within the industry.
Chiltern has built and maintained strong partnerships with these prestigious sponsors, by demonstrating the highest standard of recruitment, training and administration of Officer trainees for Marine Cadets. They aim to offer the most varied, diverse and engaged higher-level educational training program to deliver bright sky futures for the Cadets.
Unlike traditional higher education or other vocational learning, the opportunities now open to you and the experience in getting there have been transformative for generations of Cadets before you, who are now working at sea or shore side as Officers throughout the UK and Worldwide.
No matter your background or previous experience you can apply for a Cadetship with the full knowledge that you will be supported and helped along the way. Chiltern Maritime operate a unique at sea placement program where the Cadets train on various ship types across different marine sectors.

Education & Training Programs
Deck Cadetship Programs
- Deck Officer Cadetships: A Deck Officer Cadetship is the combination of your course study, your at sea placements, your qualification and the wider mentoring and welfare which are offered and administered. Each Cadetship is sponsored by a marine charity or commercial maritime company. A Deck Officer Cadetship is the springboard to an exciting career away from the normal office based nine-to-five routine. Deck Officer Cadets who qualify will be provided with a wealth of opportunities that long-term can be continued at sea or ashore.
- Deck Officer of the Watch - Foundation Degree: Most Marine Colleges/Universities offer a full Deck Officer Cadet program by a degree route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Marine Operations and a direct top-up pathway to BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management.
- Deck Officer of the Watch - Higher National Diploma Program: Most Marine Colleges offer a full deck officer cadet program by a HND route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), a High National Diploma (HND) in Marine Operations.

Marine Engineering Cadetships
- Marine Engineering Officer Cadetship: A Marine Engineering Officer Cadetship is the combination of your 3-year course study, your sea placements, your qualification and the wider mentoring and welfare Chiltern Maritime offer and administer. Each Cadetship is sponsored by a marine charity or commercial maritime company.
- Engineer Officer of the Watch - Higher National Diploma Program: Most marine colleges offer a full Engineer Officer Cadet program by a Higher National Diploma (HND) route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Engineer Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 III/I OOW), and the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Marine Engineering.
- Engine Officer of the Watch - Foundation Degree: Most Marine colleges/universities offer a full Engineer Officer Cadet program by a degree route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Engineer Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW A-III/I OOW), a Foundation Degree (FdEng) in Marine Engineering and a direct top-up pathway to BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering and Management.
- Engineer Officer of the Watch - MNTB Workshop Skills Training: Unless a candidate is exempted by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency due to previous industrial experience/qualifications, an MNTB Workshop Skills Training program has to be undertaken and passed before initial certification as Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) can be gained.
- Engineer Officer of the Watch (Specialized Route): A program leading to STCW ’95 III/1 Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certification for candidates with specialized academic qualifications and/or experience recognized by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). In addition to any other training requirements specified by the MCA in their Letter of Initial Assessment, candidates will undertake the IAMI Engineering Knowledge (EK) written examination and/or the MCA oral exam.
Electro-Technical Cadetships
- Electro-Technical Officer Cadetship: A Electro-Technical Officer Cadetship is the combination of your 3-year course study, your at sea placements, your qualification, and the wider mentoring and welfare Chiltern Maritime offer and administer. Each cadetship is sponsored by a marine charity or commercial maritime company.
- Marine Electro-Technical Officer Cadet - Foundation Degree Program: Some Marine Colleges offer a full marine Electro-Technical Officer (METO) Cadet program by a Foundation Degree route, leading ultimately to the award of - Foundation Degree (FdEng) in Marine Electrical and Electronic Engineering; UK MCA METO Certificate of Competency (STCW A-III/6 OOW); and a GMDSS radio maintenance certificate and an electronic navigation equipment maintenance (ENEM) certificate.

- Training consist of alternative college and sea phases lasting approximately 3 years.
- Phase 1 (College): General induction to the shipping industry, commence academic studies and STCW Basic Training.
- Phase 2 (At Sea): Commence ship-based training and progress MNTB Training Record Book.
- Phase 3 (College): Continue academic studies and ancillary short courses.
- Phase 4 (At-Sea): Complete ship-based training and MNTB Training Record Book.
- Phase 5 - Stage 1 (College): Consolidation of work based learning and academic studies, prior to award of Foundation Degree or HND in Marine Operations / Marine Engineering / Marine Electrical Engineering.
- Phase 5 - Stage 2 (College): STCW Advanced Training, successful completion of MCA oral examination leading to MCA Certificate of Competency.
