Warsash Superyacht Academy (WSA) is a joint initiative of Warsash Maritime School and Solent University Southampton. Located within Warsash Maritime 17-acre waterside campus in Warsash, Southampton the academy offers high quality education and training for the Superyacht industry. The school has the most comprehensive range of training programs available worldwide and trains crew and officers beyond 3,000gt. The onboard training options include a range of mandatory and non-mandatory safety course provision, PYA accredited interior crew modules and security training.

Warsash Superyacht Academy provides a range of opportunities for professional and personal development up to Master’s degree level for the future leaders of the global superyacht sector. The academy also offers a variety of blended and e-learning programs for candidates who are already working within the industry and are looking to enhance their qualifications through e-learning and distance learning.


Warsash Superyacht Academy can provide an extensive range of specialist services, such as testing and diagnostics, customized simulation and hydrodynamic evaluation in a 60-metre towing tank. They also have specialized recruitment and crew management partners to build premier crew teams according to the industry demands.

Superyacht Training Programs




Superyachts - Officer of the Watch (Yachts)

  • Officer of the Watch (Yachts) - Navigation and Radar (3 weeks): The first part of the course includes lectures covering navigational theory, electronic navigation aids and chart work. In week three, with the assistance of instructors, you will develop and practice navigation techniques in our multi-purpose radar and navigation bridge simulators. This course now includes unlimited access to an online module containing pre-course preparation materials, course notes, revision quizzes and lots of other useful information.
  • Officer of the Watch (Yachts) - General Ship Knowledge (7 days): This MCA-accredited classroom-based course will provide you with practical understanding and knowledge for the safe day-to-day operation and good management of a large yacht. The course introduces you to ship construction, stability, meteorology and seamanship, watchkeeping, preparation for sea and maintenance.

Superyachts - Master (Yachts)

  • Master (Yachts) - Seamanship and Meteorology (5 days): This course builds on the knowledge gained in the OOW (Yachts) training modules and gives a greater insight into the wide range of safety and seamanship issues required of the master of a large yacht.
  • Master (Yachts) - Business and Law (5 days): This course starts with a basic introduction to civil and criminal law, negligence and duty of care. Other subject areas include an introduction to international law, safety management, certification, documentation, safety requirements and sea worthiness.
  • Master (Yachts) - Celestial Navigation (5 days): This course will provide you with the practical understanding and knowledge of celestial navigation, including the ability to fix the vessel's position and determine compass error using celestial observations.
  • Master (Yachts) - Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator (2 weeks): This course builds on the subjects covered in the OOW (Yachts) Navigation and Radar module by refreshing training in chart work, tides and radar, and by introducing other aspects necessary at master level.

Small Vessel Second Engineer (formerly Y4) - less than 200GT and less than 1,500kW

  • Approved Engine Course One (5 days): This MCA-approved course is entry level for those wishing to work on yachts, workboats, fishing vessels, tugs, standby, seismic survey, oceanographic research vessels and government patrol vessels.
  • Approved Engine Course Two (5 days): This course forms part of the new second engineer officer qualification for small vessels less than 9,000kW and less than 3,000GT. It covers the required modules to enter the industry as a junior/assistant engineer, with the ability to progress through to the small vessel second engineer officer qualification.
  • Small Vessel Second Engineer - Marine Diesel Engineering (5 days): This course forms part of the second engineer officer qualification for small vessels (less than 9000kW and less than 3,000GT) with an unlimited area limitation. This certification is for new and experienced crew who wish to move into the small vessel environment as engineers.
  • Small Vessel Second Engineer - Operational Procedures, Basic Hotel Services and Ship Construction (5 days): This course forms part of the second engineer officer qualification for small vessels less than 9,000kW and less than 3,000GT (unlimited area).

Small Vessel Chief Engineer (formerly Y3) - Less than 500GT and less than 3,000kW

  • Small Vessel Chief Engineer - Statutory and Operational Requirements (5 days): This course forms part of the chief engineer officer qualification for small vessels (less than 9000kW and less than 3,000GT) with an unlimited area limitation.

Small Vessel Chief Engineer (formerly Y2/Y1) - Less than 3,000GT and less than 9,000kW

  • Small Vessel Chief Engineer - General Engineering Science I (5 days): This course covers mechanics and stability and prepares students to sit the MCA/SQA written exam.
  • Small Vessel Chief Engineer - General Engineering Science II (5 days): This course covers applied heat and electricity and prepares students to sit the MCA/SQA written examination.
  • Small Vessel Chief Engineer - Applied Marine Engineering (5 days): This course forms part of the chief engineer officer qualification for small vessels (less than 9000kW and less than 3,000GT) with an unlimited area limitation.
  • Small Vessel Chief Engineer - Auxiliary Equipment Part 2 (5 days): This course forms part of the chief engineer officer qualification for small vessels (less than 9000kW and less than 3,000GT) with an unlimited area.
