Established in 1897 and headquartered in Washington, DC, the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA) represents more than 970 member companies with 110,000 employees in International Trade - the nation's leading freight forwarders, customs brokers, ocean transportation intermediaries (OTIs), NVOCCs and air Cargo agents, serving more than 250,000 importers and exporters.
The NCBFAA Educational Institute (NEI) is dedicated to providing educational opportunities to the members of NCBFAA & the larger trade community in the areas of international trade, supply chain management, global logistics, customs brokerage, Export transactions, transportation, attendant government regulation, and those areas of knowledge necessary to manage or advance a career path in a business providing services to those sectors.
The NCBFAA Educational Institute is licensed in the District of Columbia by the Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) to offer online vocational training in the areas of international trade.
Certification & Training Programs
NCBFAA Specialist & Certification Programs
- Certified Customs Specialist (CCS): The NCBFAA CCS Certification Program is designed to assist trade professionals involved in the Import industry to become experts in the current Import regulations. Whether you have a broker’s license or you have just a year or two of related experience, this course will provide you with a solid foundation for you to increase your industry knowledge. The CCS Course is a six month, self-paced online offering with scheduled testing and a proctored final exam. Students are required to provide their own proctor. Eligibility includes a minimum of one year practical experience in the U.S. conduction U.S. Customs and Border Protection business. A Customs broker's license is not required to become a CCS; or a current Canadian CCS Designate.
- Certified Export Specialist (CES): The NCBFAA CES certification program is designed to help trade professionals involved in the export industry to become competent and knowledgeable in the current export regulations. You will find that participation in the CES program will provide you numerous venues for honing your professional skills while continuing to keep up with the rapidly changing marketplace within which OTI/Freight Forwarders function. The CES Course is a completely one-year, self-paced online offering with a proctored final exam (also Online). Eligibility includes at least one year of experience in the U.S. export business.
- Master Export Specialist (MES): Designed for a broad audience that includes shippers, carriers, freight forwarders, bankers, government employees, insurance professionals and students alike, this certificate program introduces an even higher level of excellence to the NEI's outstanding continuing education program with the addition of its newest credential; a 60-hour online export certification program entitled the Master Export Specialist (MES).
- Export 101 (online): This course is an overview of export transaction basics and responsibilities, U.S. export regulatory requirements, and the forwarder process. This four-part course incorporates critical thinking questions throughout to help you learn the material and get you to start thinking like an export specialist. Upon completion of the course, you will have a firm understanding of the basic requirements for the freight forwarder documentation and shipping process.
