Located in San Diego, California, Boater U is a part of the Training Resources Maritime Institute (TRLMI), the largest maritime training center on the west coast and specializes in boating safety courses. Boater U offers boating classes for complete beginners who may never have stepped foot on a boat, to seasoned sailors looking to enhance skills making them more self-sufficient in areas like maintenance and repairs.

The Sherman Street (San Diego) campus was built in 2017 and houses 14 classrooms, full bridge Simulator, engine room simulator, high voltage simulator, ARPA/ECDIS simulator, DC trainer and lifeboat trainer to service the professional mariner.

Upon completion of the Boater 100 or Boater 101 power boating safety course you will also receive you California Boating License. Boater U’s on the water power boat training course give you the hands-on experience to become a proficient power boater and you will learn to dock confidently, on the water power boat handling in high winds and waves and much more.

For those more experienced boaters the boat maintenance and troubleshooting courses will help you safely troubleshoot and repair issues while out on the water, as well as, learn to maintain the boats engines and systems to prevent or minimize potential boating breakdowns.

Training Programs

Boating Safety & License Courses

  • BOATER 100 - Boating Basics Online Course (3 hours): Boater U’s Boating Basics course is an approved safe boating course for obtaining your California Boater Card. The California Boater Card is required for all recreational power boaters under the age of 35, as of January 1, 2020 and under the age of 40 beginning January 1, 2021.
  • BOATER 101 - Boating Skills & Seamanship (20 hours): Gain the knowledge and skills needed for safe boating. Learn to avoid problems and spend more time enjoying your time on the water. Boater 101 teaches solutions and management of common issues and how to prevent them from happening.
  • BOATER 102 - Boat Control Course (BCC) (16 hours): This on the water training course will teach all the basic skills of power boat operations. The course is taught using the National Safe Boating Council Curriculum and is NASBLA approved.
  • Boater 103 - Celestial as a backup to GPS: The course will teach mariners how to obtain latitude and longitude from sun lines and latitude by Polaris sights on any date. The course format is a combination of lecture and hands-on instruction.

Boat Maintenance Courses

  • BOATER 200 - Diesel Engine Maintenance (15 hours): The Marine Diesel Engine Maintenance class is designed to benefit recreational boaters and professional mariners who operate vessels with two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines. The course covers diesel engines in general and is not brand specific. Students will learn the unique characteristics of and differences between two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
  • BOATER 201 - Outboard Motor Operations & Maintenance (15 hours): This course is designed to benefit recreational and professional mariners who operate vessels with two-stroke and four-stroke outboard motors. The course covers outboard motors in general and is not brand specific. Students will learn the unique characteristics of and differences between two-stroke and four-stroke motors.
  • BOATER 202 - Marine Electrical Systems (15 hours): This course is designed to benefit recreational and professional mariners who operate private vessels utilizing 30-, 50- and 100-amp ac/dc electrical systems.
