Located in Santa Cruz CA & Bellingham WA, Maritime Medical Guides provides a range of adventure based, maritime-specific medical training courses to help provide the sailing and boating community with the knowledge base and hands-on skills to lead more prepared and safer adventures.
Whether it is a day out on the lake or an around-the world expedition, having the right training and skill set can make all the difference in unexpected emergencies.
Maritime Medical Guides is the seafaring branch of Backcountry Medical Guides. Backcountry Medical Guides provides a wide range of accredited, sport-specific medical training courses for mountain bikers, trail runners, skiers and snowboarders, and general wilderness medicine. The class offerings include internationally recognized and accredited courses as well as advanced maritime medical courses for healthcare practitioners. They also offer an online course which can be paired with a range of in-person skills training sessions to meet accreditation criteria. In addition, they organize customized trainings and maritime adventure expeditions.
The courses are conducted in Sausalito, San Diego, and Los Angeles in California & Bellingham, and San Juan Islands in Washington.
Training Programs
Online Program
- Maritime Medicine Online: Learn about traumatic, medical, and maritime emergencies, gain access to documents/ quick guides, and review insightful knowledge with the experts. This online course is included in the First Aid/ CPR for Mariners, Advanced First Aid/ CPR for Mariner, and Maritime-Wilderness First Responder in-person sessions.
First Aid, CPR and Other Programs
- First Aid/ CPR For Mariners: 1st Aid/ CPR For Mariners satisfies requirements for 1st Aid/ CPR Certification while also including additional modules (Drowning/Cold Water Immersion, Maritime Safety Systems, and Hypothermia) as well as contextual importance that focuses on the knowledge and safety for the mariner. Please note, this program is only available for private groups currently.
- Advanced First Aid/ CPR For Mariners: Dive into the most common types of boating injuries, preventative strategies, and sailing techniques to stay safe on the water. Learn maritime-specific considerations not commonly taught in standard first aid courses. If you are spending time cruising, racing, out for the day, or offshore for a month, the knowledge gained in our Advanced First Aid/CPR for Mariners course is an essential part of your tool kit.
- Maritime Wilderness First Responder: The Maritime Wilderness First Responder course will give you the knowledge and skills to handle a variety of common scenarios that you may face both on land and at sea. This program embarks aboard a variety of sailing vessels on a multi-day, in-person educational tour-de San Juan Islands. Students camp on various islands throughout the archipelago and do skills both onshore and offshore between destinations.
- Custom Courses, Private Groups, Crew/Yacht Training, Youth Courses: Whether you are a sailing club or team, group or regatta, our course catalog ranges from 1-day harbor conferences to 10-day sailing expeditions. Each course is taught by experienced medical, rescue, and maritime professionals.
