Established in 2013 and located in Key West FL, the Captain School Key West provides offers Coast Guard Approved Courses by USCG Approved Instructors. They offer STCW certification classes to meet International Certification needs of the professional mariners.

Captain School Key is approved for online classes and provides Blended Learning Program along with Traditional Classroom Training, On-the-Water Training.

Captain School Key West also provides specialized professional training for Navy (Small Boat Teams), Army (Special Forces), FBI (Hostage Recovery Team), and many more. In addition, they also train recreational mariners in the art of navigation and self sufficiency including hands-on and classroom training revolving around a working marine environment.

USCG Captain's & Master's Licenses

  • OUPV (6pak): OUPV Inland allows operation of an uninspected vessel carrying up to six passengers on inland waters only. OUPV Near Coastal allows operation of an uninspected vessel carrying up to six passengers up to 100 miles offshore. Great Lakes Endorsement - if you have 90 days of your total sea time on the Great Lakes, you will be eligible for this endorsement.
  • Online OUPV: On-line course takes roughly 56 hours to complete with topics including - Rules of the Road , use of navigation charts, radio operation, various survival techniques, distress signaling, boating terminology, boat equipment, emergency signaling devices, use of personal flotation equipment, seamanship, anchoring, aids to navigation, vessel documentation, general navigation, marlinespike seamanship, Firefighting and more.
  • Hybrid OUPV (6pak) Class: Get your Captain’s License in 3 days of class/water time after completion of 30 hour online prep course
  • Masters Upgrade 25/50/100 GT: The Masters license allows the transport of passengers on an inspected passenger vessel. These vessels must have a Certificate of Inspection (COI) which states the number of passengers allowed and area of operation.
  • Sail or Auxiliary Sail Endorsement: This is a four-hour USCG Approved classroom-based course that will cover the written examination requirement for a candidate holding a USCG Master license to obtain a Sailing or Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement.
  • Tow Endorsement: The Commercial Assistance Towing Endorsement is a four-hour USCG Approved course for a mariner holding any license. This license is strictly for assisting disabled vessels.
  • 200 GT Master Upgrade: USCG approved upgrade to Master/Mate 200GT course is for mariners holding a license as Master, Mate or OUPV. The mariner must be able to show 360 days while holding a license.

STCW Courses

  • STCW Basic Safety Training: This course is for personnel working on the following vessels that operate seaward of the boundary line listed in 46 CFR Part 7 (The boundary line separates state from international waters). It is also required for all personnel operating on foreign / international voyages, regardless of the size of the vessel.
  • Crowd Management: This course satisfies the requirements for those personnel designated on muster lists to assist passengers in emergency situations and officers in charge of a Navigational watch on passenger vessels for Precautions for Protection and Safety of Passengers in accordance with the ISM Code and STCW 95 Regulations A-V/2 and A-V/3, (pa.4,5 &6) and STCW 95 Code Sections A-V/2 and A-V/3 (pa.1,2 & 3).

  • CPR/First Aid: The American Heart Association CPR/First Aid certification course meets U.S Coast Guard criteria. One must have a current certification in order to apply for a captain’s license. Meets AHA and STCW Requirements.
