Located in Merritt Island, the Captain School Space Coast is a USCG approved and part of the Captain School Key West. Established in 2013 and located in Key West FL, the Captain School Key West provides offers Coast Guard Approved Courses by USCG Approved Instructors. They offer STCW certification classes to meet International Certification needs of the professional mariners.

In 2020, Captain School Key West teamed up with the City of Miami Fire Department Fire College to bring the learning platform to Coconut Grove. In 2023 they opened the Captain School Space Coast and took over the Captain School New Orleans in 2024. The school offers 3 different types of training to meet your individual needs. Traditional Classroom Training, On-the-Water Training, Online Training or a combination of all. 

The main classroom is in Key West, FL, however we do teach throughout the Florida Keys, Mississippi, North Carolina, Maine, Coconut Grove, Miami, FL, Merritt Island and New Orleans. Captain School Key West, Captain School Miami, Captain School Merritt Island and Captain School New Orleans are the only schools that teach and tests with current charts and current Navigational publications in the classroom with hands-on instruction on the water.

Training Programs

USCG Approved Courses

  • OUPV (6-Pack): The OUPV license allows the transport of up to six passengers on an uninspected vessel.
  • Masters Upgrade 25/50/100 GT: The Masters license allows the transport of passengers on an inspected passenger vessel. These vessels must have a Certificate Of Inspection (COI) which states the number of passengers allowed and area of operation.
  • 200 GT Masters Upgrade: USCG approved upgrade to Master/Mate 200GT course is for mariners holding a license as Master, Mate or OUPV. The mariner must be able to show 360 days while holding a license.
  • Sailing Endorsement: This is a four-hour USCG Approved classroom based course that will cover the written examination requirement for a candidate holding a USCG Master license to obtain a Sailing or Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement.
  • Towing Endorsement: The Commercial Assistance Towing Endorsement is a four hour USCG Approved course for a mariner holding any license. This license is strictly for assisting disabled vessels. 
  • OUPV and Masters Renewal: Your license must be renewed every 5 years. There is a one year grace period, but you cannot use your license during this time.

STCW Courses

  • STCW Basic Safety Training: Personnel working on the following vessels that operate seaward of the boundary line listed in 46 CFR Part 7 (The boundary line separates state from international waters.) requires STCW Basic Training.
  • Crowd Management: Crowd Management training is specifically designed for officers and crew responsible for controlling passengers during emergency situations.
