RYA Practical Training & Exams, Online Courses and Other Specialized Boat Programs in Lefkas, Greece

Located in Lefkas (Lefkada) Island, Sail Ionian RYA Sea School is the longest established RYA Sea School in the Ionian. The Ionian in Greece, is a group of Greek islands which form the sea boundary of Greece with Italy. The school offers a full range of RYA Training Courses, using selected yachts coded for RYA training. They also provide yailored courses meet the specific needs of the trainees whether it is the first time on a yacht or an experienced sailor.

Sail Ionian School is located in a perfect area for both sailing and power handling and aim to provide a unique, valuable and fun learning experience with an RYA school with great reputation and a team of highly qualified and experienced instructors.

Sail Ionian only takes a maximum of 4 trainees on board on the group courses. They feel a smaller group size gives us more time for individual attention and tuition. Thereby, offering the best learning experience and ability to be able to practice and demonstrate skills.

RYA Practical Courses

• RYA Competent Crew (6 days): The RYA Competent Crew course is ideal for: dinghy sailors, those completely new to sailing or anyone who has already done some crewing but would like to learn a little more. You will learn all the skills required to be a useful crew member aboard a yacht anywhere in the world.
• RYA Day Skipper Practical (5 days + 1 free sail day): The day skipper course is designed to build on your existing sailing skills and put your theory knowledge to the test, we will improve your sailing skills and theory understanding by structured teaching sessions.
• RYA Coastal Skipper (5 days + 1 free sail day): The Coastal Skipper course teaches you the skills and techniques required to safely skipper a yacht on coastal or offshore passages by day or night. It is the ideal bridge between Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Coastal.
• RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Prep Course & Exam (5 days preparation + 2 days exam): This preparation week is an intense week of coaching including plenty of night sailing, sailing and power handling exercises and navigation.  After classes an independent RYA/MCA examiner will board and you are expected to plan passages for day and night and be quizzed up to Yachtmaster Coastal level, The exam lasts between 6 and 10 hours for one candidate.
• RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Prep Course & Exam (5 days preparation + 2 days exam):  It is a thorough week of training including plenty of night sailing, sailing exercises and power handling exercises, navigation and passage planning. At the end of the week an external RYA/MCA examiner will come on board to conduct the exam which normally takes around 12 hours per candidate.

RYA Online Theory Courses

• Essential Navigation & Seamanship: This RYA theory course will give you the essential knowledge needed when you’re afloat, from navigation to safety and seamanship to passage planning.  If you want to brush up before an ICC examination it is also a great option.
• Day Skipper Theory: All lessons are fully narrated and exercises are presented in several ways, not just multiple choice.  Mock exams are provided to help you check your knowledge and prepare you for the real thing at the end.
• Yachtmaster Theory: Advanced navigation, pilotage, meteorology & collision regulations. The Coastal/Yachtmaster theory course is the level required for RYA Yachtmaster Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical certificates and is a pre-course requirement for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean theory course.

Specialist Training Courses

• ICC Assessments (2 days): This ICC course is normally run as a two-day course with the first day for brushing up your skills and the second day for the actual assessment. If you have the RYA Day Skipper Practical Certification or higher, this enables you to apply directly for an ICC without having to do any further assessments.
• Own Boat Tuition: Sail Ionian’s instructors will meet you at your yacht in order to teach any of the RYA practical courses or for informal tuition and refresher training.
• Powerboat Level 2 (2 days): This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
