Established in 1979 and located on the Rondout Creek, Kingston, NY, the Hudson River Maritime Museum (HRMM) preserves, interprets, and celebrates the maritime history, traditions, industries, and communities of the Hudson River and its tributaries.
HRMM is a multi-functioning education hub and dynamic working waterfront. that includes an extensive collection of maritime artifacts and historic vessels, the Wooden Boat School, a Sailing School, a marina with public docking, a solar-powered tour boat, Solaris Boat Tours, and homeport barn - a public events space. Additionally, the museum operates the Rondout Lighthouse - the last of three lighthouses marking the entrance to the Rondout Creek - accessible only via guided boat tours.
HRMM shares its knowledge, research, and collections through year-round programming that fosters environmental stewardship and enjoyment of the river. HRMM welcomes more than 30,000 people of all ages and abilities annually to exhibits, public events, school field trips, on-the-water activities like sailing classes, boat tours, woodworking, furniture making, boat building, and more.
Educational Training Programs
Maritime Training
- Captain’s License, Six Pack through 100-ton Master: The course is for Six-Pack through 100-ton master and is ideal for those who are uncertified or for people seeking to refresh their skills in navigation, chart plotting, Rules of the Road , and safety and regulations. It is the highest-level license and is required for operators of both inspected and uninspected vessels. The credential can serve as proof of experience and may reduce insurance costs.
Wooden Boat School
- Boat Restoration: The Wooden Boat School restores wooden vessels of all ages for their collection. If you are interested in being a part of this exciting movement to get the boat out on the water once again, consider joining one of the restoration seminars.
- Build Your Own Skin-On-Frame Canoe: Learn to build your very own skin-on-frame tandem canoe from veteran instructor Rich Cerruto over two consecutive long weekends.
- Boat Owners Series - Basics of Epoxy: In this brief evening class, learn the basics of using epoxy for marine applications from John Van Buren, who will demonstrate its properties and applications.
- Foundations of Woodworking - Understanding Wood: In this first course of the series, students explore the nature of wood as a material and the unique qualities it has, from living organism to lumber. They learn about different common and exotic wood species, and the properties that make each of them suited to different applications, whether for furniture making, cabinetmaking, carpentry, or boatbuilding.
- Foundations of Woodworking - Hand Tools Use & Care: In this second class of the five-class series, students will learn about the hand tools in a basic woodworking kit including layout and measuring tools like the combination square and marking gauge, Japanese and western-style saws, chisels, and several types of block plane.
- Foundations of Woodworking - Machine Tools & Shop Safety: In this third class of the five-class series, students will learn how to safely handle tools and machinery in a shop setting.
- Foundations of Woodworking, Intro to Joinery - Make a Tool Box: In this session you will build your own tool box with your choice of the joints you learn: dovetail, miter, box, and half-lap joints.

- NYS Boating Safety Certification Class: Boaters can earn their certificate by taking a New York Safe Boating Course that teaches basic boating skills and encourages common sense and courtesy to all who share the water.
