USCG Captains License Courses

  • OUPV Course: The OUPV License, sometimes referred as the Six Pak is the basic building block in putting together your suite of USCG licenses. It allows the license holder to carry up to 6 passengers for hire on a vessel no larger than 100 ton. In order to hold an OUPV license, the holder must be reasonably in good health, drug free and have at least 360 days or sea time. That sea time does not have to be on commercial vessels. his course teaches the basics required to pass the four OUPV tests (Rules of the Road , Deck General, Deck Navigation and Chart Plotting).
  • Masters Upgrade Course: The Master’s Upgrade provides for an OUPV license holder to advance to the Master’s Level. Holders of a Master’s License may take out an unlimited number of passengers on inspected vessels. A Master is only limited by the size of the vessels they are experienced on (tonnage) and the scope of their license (Bodies of water they can operate on).
  • Assistance Towing: The towing endorsement allows the holder to engage in assistance towing (towing disabled vessels) for hire. This endorsement is required if you get a job with an assistance towing company such as Tow BoatUs or Sea Tow.
  • Sail Endorsement: The sail endorsement allows the holder to operate inspected sailing vessels (able to carry 7 or more passengers for hire). As this allows that the sailing vessel be inspected, this endorsement is only available to holders of a Master’s License.
  • FCC MROP License: US Regulations state that all persons that operate radio equipment on vessels carrying more than 6 passengers for hire on the ocean, tidal waters or the Great Lakes must have a Marine Radio Operators Permit, Radio class MP. Obtaining this license requires that the applicant passes an exam administered by an authorized person.
