Established in 2007 and located at located in Norfolk Virginia, Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy (MAMA) is a vocational training center for merchant mariners and those who seek professional training to become one.

MAMA offers more than 90 USCG approved deck and engineering courses.MAMA provides hands on and simulated training by experienced professionals.

The facilities include Transas Navi-Trainer Professional 5000 Full Mission Bridge Simulator, Transas Full Mission Engine Room simulator, ECDIS , ARPA, GMDSS and Radar classroom simulators, Transas ERS-4000 Engine Room Simulator.

MAMA also has full-sized gravity davit and 12 man lifeboat installations located on the waterfront in Cape Charles. MAMA also has advanced fire-fighting facilities on its premises and lab trainers including Fluid Pumps, Hydraulics, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Various Types of Electrical Motors.

Maritime Boot Camp Program

  • The Maritime Boot Camp program is designed to produce fully credentialed and professionally trained mariners that are qualified to join any US Merchant Vessel at the entry level.
  • Students will obtain their Transportation Worker’s Identification Card (TWIC), their US Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), and will be rated by Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers (STCW).
  • Also includes an on-the-job internship of up to 160 hours (average 40 hrs/ week over 4 weeks, but schedules depend on individual company operations). During classroom training, individuals are expected to successfully complete several courses.
  • Basic Training - USCG certification course (40 hrs / 5-days)
  • Deck Familiarization (32 hrs / 4 days)
  • Engine-Room Familiarization (16 hrs / 2 days)
