TAFE QUEENSLAND EAST COAST

Located in the northeastern part of Australia, TAFE Queensland East Coast is the premier provider of vocational education and training in the region and is part of the 13 college TAFE Queensland network (TAFE Queensland NorthTAFE Queensland Brisbane, GBRIMC Marine College plus more). The training is competency based, focusing on the development of workplace skills and are available full-time, part-time, externally, on-the-job or online, and range from a Certificate to Advanced Diploma level and dual programs with universities.

TAFE Queensland East Coast provides an extensive range of nationally-recognized programs and courses across locations (Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Maroochydore, Maryborough, Mooloolaba & Nambour) in the region. TAFE Queensland East Coast has articulation agreements with the University of the Sunshine Coast, University of Southern Queensland and Central Queensland University that will give you direct access or credit for your existing TAFE qualification.

Maritime Training Programs


Certificate Programs

  • Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 near coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 3000 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).(200miles).
  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 near coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).(200 miles off shore)
  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 meters Near Coastal): To obtain a license to command a vessel up to 24 meters, 200nm off shore, the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 meters Near Coastal) and completion of task book will significantly reduce the amount of logged sea time required by AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority).
  • Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal): Training for a career where you are in charge of a vessel up to 12 meters long and can take passengers 15 nautical miles to sea.
  • Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 near coastal): This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 500 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW, in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). (200 miles offshore)
  • Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal): This qualification is suitable for people working in entry level positions in the maritime industry as a General Purpose Hand on deck or in the engine room of a vessel up to 80 meters within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or in the engine room only for a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000 kW.

Short Courses

  • Elements of Shipboard Safety: Ensure all of your boating experiences sail smoothly by completing a short course in Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) at TAFE Queensland East Coast. This safety skill set covers the Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) competency units required by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Study areas include - basic fire fighting; life raft skills; emergency procedures; shipboard OH&S and survival at sea in the event of vessel abandonment.
  • GMDSS Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - General Operators Certificate: This program has been designed for people looking to gain their GMDSS General Operators Certificate to use this system. Held over eight days (including one Saturday) this program will teach you to use live to air as well as computer based practice equipment.
  • GMDSS Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - Revalidation: The GMDSS Revalidation course is offered to holders of a GMDSS General Operators Certificate that is no longer valid because the holder has been working in a shore based job and wishes to return to sea. The GMDSS-GOC must also be revalidated every 5 years for shore based personnel to maintain their other seafaring qualifications.
