Located at Cairns in North Queensland Australia, Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC) provides maritime education and training for seafarers nationwide. GBRIMC is also part of the college TAFE Queensland network. GBRIMC's state-of-the-art training facility offers a comprehensive range of maritime training qualifications and certificates, in accordance with regulatory requirements and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and STCW.

GBRIMC provides certification in accordance with national and international regulatory requirements. The courses are developed in close consultation with industry to support the needs of the maritime sector. Training can be tailored to suit individual or company requirements and delivered on-site at our custom-built facilities or offsite at an approved location.

The facilities include a Full Mission Bridge Simulator (Kongsberg Polaris), Tug-optimized bridge, Desktop simulators, Multi-purpose Emergency Response Training Simulator (MERTS), Engineering workshops, Immersion pool and, a 20 metre commercially registered vessel MV Gwendoline May which is configured to meet the practical requirements of relevant training programs.

Education & Training Programs


Entry Level Courses

  • Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) (5days, full-time): This course is the perfect introduction for those who are interested in working in the maritime industry and covers emergency vessel procedures, nautical terminology and practical seamanship.
  • Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) (2 weeks, full-time): Participants gain the skills to command a commercial vessel (up to 12m in length, not carrying passengers) and operate this vessel in sheltered waters within three nautical miles of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) (4 weeks, full-time): This course will advance maritime career to become a Coxswain of commercial vessels up to 12m long. This course will teach students how to operate and maintain auxiliary marine engine systems, how to plan and navigate a passage and how to operate inboard and outboard motors.

Deck Level Courses

  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 meters Near Coastal) (6 weeks, full-time): This course will teach how to operate propulsion systems, steering and navigation systems, radar and other electronic navigation equipment, radio systems and safety management equipment as well as maintenance on most aspects of a vessel.
  • Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 meters Near Coastal) (6 weeks, full-time): This qualification is open to highly experienced seafarers who have acquired a significant amount of sea time and want to apply for a Certificate of Competence as a Master less than 35m Near Coastal. This course will teach how to forecast the weather and predict ocean conditions, manage a small crew and act as a chief mate on a vessel up to 80m long.

Engineering Courses

  • Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) (3 weeks, full-time): This qualification allows to act as a Chief Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 500kW or as a Second Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 750kW in the Exclusive Economic Zone. Learn how to work in an engine room, service and maintain internal combustion engines and operate deck machinery.
  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) (4weeks, full-time): Learn to operate and maintain equipment in larger vessels. This qualification allows to act as a Chief Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 750kW or as a Second Engineer with propulsion power up to 1500kW in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
  • Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal) (6 weeks, full-time): This qualification allows to act as a Chief Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 1500kW or as a Second Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000kW in the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Marine Cookery Courses

  • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Cookery): This course teaches how to organize and prepare food, understand the basic methods of cookery and hygiene, and how to safely work on board a vessel. This course will help become a professional cook or chef in the maritime industry.
