Established in 1998, Nova College is a vocational education training college located at various lactations in Netherlands. The main campuses and centers are located at Amstelveen, Beverwijk, Haarlem, Harlingen, Hoofddorp, and Ijmuiden. Nova College offers training in MBO and adult education with more than 200 courses and over 12,000 students.

Training and courses are available at all levels and approximately 10,000 attend vocational training. The VET program encompasses Economics, Technology, Social Care, Health and Welfare from assistant to specialist or middle management levels. Logistics programs are conducted at Hoofddorp and maritime courses in Amsterdam.

Maritime Academy Holland (Maritiem Academie Holland) which is part of the Nova College, is located at Port of Amsterdam and offers courses for maritime professionals and those seek new career path at all levels. The academy’s educational curriculum includes training and education programs for professional for inland shipping and seafarers of all forms of waterway transport. The academy also offers harbor training courses and customized training.

Training Programs

Level 4 Maritime Programs (Dutch)

  • Inland Shipping Captain (1 year): You learn to manage the crew, navigate and be responsible for the safety of those on board, the maintenance of the ship and the Cargo. You also learn to arrange administrative matters such as waybills and customs documents.
  • Maritime Officer Program - All Ships (4 years): You learn to sail on seagoing vessels in the merchant navy, hydraulic engineering and fisheries. As an all-round manager you are responsible for safety on board, the loading of the ship and safe and efficient navigation. After a number of sailing years you can become a captain.
  • Maritime officer (Marine Engineering) Program - All Ships (4 years): You learn to sail on all types of seagoing vessels - merchant shipping, hydraulic engineering and fishing. You are also responsible for the technology on board. You ensure safe and economic shipping. After a number of sailing years you can become chief engineer on all types of ships.
  • Marine Technician Program (4 years): With this diploma you can work as a marine technician at the Royal Navy on naval vessels. Another option is that after the basic Maritime officer course you continue your education at Nova College Scheepvaart and continue your education towards the Koopvaardij or Hydraulic Engineering.

Level 3 Maritime Programs (Dutch)

  • Maritime Officer Program - Small Ships (3 years): You learn to sail as a helmsman on small merchant ships, tugboats, supply ships, dredgers and sailing contractor equipment. During your training you choose between merchant shipping or fishing. After a number of sailing years you can become a captain or work ashore.
  • Skipper Inland Shipping (3 years): You learn to manage your sailors and be responsible for the entire ins and outs of your ship. You learn how to sail the ship to its destination, ensure the safety of those on board and how to be responsible for the cargo. In addition, you learn to ensure that the maintenance of the ship is carried out on time and to solve malfunctions yourself.

Level 2 Maritime Programs (Dutch)

  • Sailor Inland Shipping (2 years): You learn to help the skipper or captain with all the work on a ship. Part of the job depends on the type of ship you're on and the cargo it's carrying. You will also learn maintenance such as painting, chipping away rust, deck scrubbing and minor repairs.
  • Skipper Tour Boat (2 years): You learn to sail fixed and changing routes with domestic and foreign tourists. You will also learn to receive guests on board from company outings, seminars, weddings, anniversaries and other festive occasions.

Logistics Training (Dutch, Hoofddorp)

  • Logistics - Level 2, 2 years
  • Logistics Team Leader - Level 3, 2 years
  • Logistics (Supervisor Level) - Level 4, 3 years
  • Manager (Transport and Logistics) - Level 4, 3 years
