Hapag-Lloyd deploys a modern fleet of more than 140 containerships. All Hapag-Lloyd vessels are certified according to ISM (International Safety Management) and hold a valid ISSC (ISPS ) certificate. Most vessels are certified according to ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management). Hapag-Lloyd vessels are specially equipped for the transport of various goods, e.g. cargo with extraordinary / oversized dimensions, reefer cargo and dangerous goods that have to be stowed and transported according to IMO-regulations.

Apprenticeships & Studies
- German Apprenticeship: The apprenticeship program is only available in Germany, fluency of German is required. Hapag-Lloyd is currently training every year more than 30 young people in occupation onshore and more than 40 trainees for a seafaring career. The apprenticeship is provided in variety of career areas such as logistics, shipping agent, ship mechanic, ship officer etc.
- BA or BSc Degree Programs with Training: These programs are provided by the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) and the trainees can combine training with studies. The programs offered are – BA in Business Administration; BA in Logistics Management; BA in Maritime Management; and BSc in Computer Science.
Working On Board
For the fleet, Hapag-Lloyd looks for qualified personnel - short- and long-term - to work on board container ships, sailing under German flag. Opportunities are generally available in the following areas:
- Management Level: Captain; Chief Officer; Chief Engineer; and Second Engineer.
- Operational Level: Officer of the watch; Ship Operations Officer; Engineer of the watch; and Electrical Engineer.
