Transport Canada Approved Small Vessel Training Programs in Richmond, BC

Established in 2004 and located in Richmond BC, Fish Safe operates as the BC commercial fishing industry’s designated health and safety association. Fish Safe has been driven by a belief that because commercial fishermen are the primary stakeholders engaged in fishing, they should also be the primary voices utilized in defining, designing and delivering safety training in their industry.
Over the years, Fish Safe has collaborated closely with industry in the development of practical tools that give commercial fishermen the safety knowledge they require. From handy, fishery specific Best Practices checklists to resources like the Safest Catch Wheelhouse Log Book, BC commercial fishermen have a wealth of safety resources at their disposal.
Fish Safe offers Transport Canada and WorkSafeBC recognized programs for commercial fishermen and this type of training includes one on one training on board the vessel with the master and crew. The courses are mainly conducted in Richmond, BC.

Transport Canada Certifications
- Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Course: Fish Safe offers a customized SVOP course that's both practical and fun and was designed by BC commercial fishermen specifically for commercial fishermen. Navigation, Chartwork, Electronics, Buoyage, Weather and What If’s are all covered to help make for safer wheel turns. A SVOP certificate will be issued by Transport Canada to all course graduates.
- Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS): The Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS) course is an essential Transport Canada minimum requirement for virtually every commercial fisherman in Canada. Fish Safe delivers this course free of charge via its Safest Catch program on board your vessel where it is appropriate to do so. Learn the basics of cold water survival, making a mayday call, Firefighting, using flares in an emergency and more.
- Restricted Operator Certificate-Maritime (ROC-M) Course: Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Transport Canada stipulates that this ROC-Maritime 1-day workshop is required by all onboard.
